Vatican Papal Tunnel and Castel Sant’Angelo Experience

Description
Discover the Secrets of the Passetto di Borgo: Vatican's Hidden Path Step into the shadows of history with the Passetto di Borgo, one of Rome’s most fascinating and enigmatic landmarks. This ancient, elevated passageway stretches from Vatican City to Castel Sant’Angelo, holding centuries of secrets—whispers of popes, conspiracies, and daring escapes. With a dedicated host (not a tour guide), you'll access the Passetto di Borgo and walk along this restricted historic route, once used by popes fleeing danger. After the Passetto experience, you’ll continue independently to Castel Sant’Angelo, exploring this imposing fortress and museum at your own pace. Discover its papal apartments, prison cells, and panoramic terraces. Fans of Dan Brown’s Angels & Demons will recognize the Passetto as a key setting in the thrilling tale of hidden Vatican secrets. As you walk through this mysterious corridor, you’ll feel the weight of centuries of intrigue, power, and faith.

Itinerary
The Passetto di Borgo is a hidden passageway that connects the Vatican City with Castel Sant'Angelo. Built in the 13th century, it was originally designed as a secret escape route for the Pope in times of danger. Stretching over 800 meters, this narrow corridor allowed the Pontiff to travel safely between the Vatican and the fortress, especially during times of political unrest. Today, it remains a fascinating piece of Rome's history, offering visitors a glimpse into the city's medieval past.
Castel Sant'Angelo is one of Rome's most iconic landmarks, originally built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century. Over the centuries, it has served as a fortress, a papal residence, and a military stronghold. Today, it is a fascinating museum offering breathtaking views of the city, along with an intriguing glimpse into its history. Explore its vast halls, ancient weaponry, and the famous secret passage to the Vatican, the Passetto di Borgo.

My early tour was folded into a later one. I had booked early because of the extreme heat. The tour was fine but wanted to be done earlier. They said it was an "operational" issue. I suspect they didn't have enough to justify the earlier one. Not the guide's fault.

Lots to see but would have like a little explanation or information on the purpose and use of the actual tunnel.
