No better way to experience The Vatican

This was our 1st time to Rome and to experience Mass with the Pope. Viator made the entire process so easy. We stood in no lines other than waiting to get into St. Peter’s Square. For the other tours inside The Vatican, we were escorted past the hundreds of people in line to right where we met our tour guide. The Viator employee let us know exactly what they were doing at all times and where we were to wait, they took care of everything. Will definitely use Viator again for our travels.

Great sites but poorly organized tour

We arrived at the meeting point early and were offered to leave with the earlier group which was great. The group was an elderly lady, an older couple, and a young family. The tour leader almost ran to the next meeting point, leaving people struggling to stay together, which was another tour company which brought another group of people together. We got there and waited for over 10 mins so we could have walked slower. Once we were organized our actual tour guide took the group on a run to the Vatican. He was up to 300m ahead of the group at one point. There were other people in the street, other tours merging together it was ridiculous. We had no idea where we were going and only just caught the site of his flag way up ahead. We struggled to the entrance stopping to help the elderly lady and the family with young kids just to get to the line. Once there we waited for ages to get tickets. Poorly done and very dangerous too. The tour through to the pristine chapel was boring. Most of the people had walked away not listening as our guide was very difficult to understand. His accent was so strong it was very hard to tell what he was saying and did not sound much like English. As we RAN along through the passageways we barely stopped to take pictures. Everything was so rushed yet we had spent 20 minutes outside listening to the guide go on and on about the sistine chapel paintings. During our tour the elderly lady collapsed from fatigue. Having to stand and listen then basically run to the chapel. Fortunately she was ok but was not good. We then went to the chapel and then on to the cathedral which we did on our own time. To be honest I felt like herded cattle the whole time as did most of our group. There was no real care taken to ensure we were safe, no rest breaks, and the tour was a waste of money. If not for the actual sites seen- which were spectacular I would request a refund.

Operator response

Dear Mrs Nicky T Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I sincerely apologize for your experience on the Vatican tour. As we are in the peak season, the Vatican has been experiencing a high volume of visitors. Our guides try their best to navigate the group through the museum and avoid the crowd but at times, it can be out of our control. However, we offer a Vatican Museums early morning tour that allows our guests to tour the grounds before the museum has opened to the general public and the crowds have cleared. Thank you again for your feedback. Kind regards, Stefano, Tour in the City Customer Care

Not recommended

The guide seemed annoyed and unmotivated, the group was much too large, so people were constantly “lost” and the guide had to pick them up again, it took over 1 1/2 hours from the start of the tour to the first sightseeing point. We would not book it anymore!

Excellent value for money

Our guide Simone was wonderful and led us through the Vatican Museum pointing out all the interesting paintings, statues, tapestries and all the beautiful rooms. She made the whole tour enthralling with her knowledge and enthusiasm. It was well worth the money paid as the queues waiting to go inside were huge but we were able to go immediately into the Museums. The tour took approximately three hours but the time just flew by as Simone directed us to the most prominent exhibits and answered fully all our questions. The only downside of the tour were the crowds as so many people are allowed entry at the same time.
