Rome Art Walking Tour Who Killed Caravaggio

Description
Enter the world of Baroque Rome through the dramatic lens of one man—Caravaggio. Designed to be enjoyed in any weather, this walking tour moves between open piazzas and cool, atmospheric churches, offering shade, shelter, and moments to sit along the way. Whether under the blazing Roman sun or escaping sudden rain, you’ll explore comfortably while diving deep into one of art history’s greatest mysteries. A genius with a taste for danger, Caravaggio created some of the most powerful works in Western art before vanishing under mysterious circumstances. This walking tour blends art, history, and true crime, following his footsteps through Rome’s iconic sites and hidden corners. As we admire his masterpieces and retrace his tumultuous life, we’ll slowly piece together a deadly puzzle that’s remained unsolved for over 400 years. This is a tip-based tour! Our guides work on a Pay-What-You-Want model, so their only reward is your tips. At the end, give what you feel the tour was worth.

Itinerary
Piazza della Minerva, near the Pantheon, features Bernini's Elephant and Obelisk and the Gothic Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, built over an ancient temple to the goddess Minerva. This compact square beautifully blends Roman history with Baroque art.
Rome’s Pantheon, built around 126 AD, stuns with its giant domed roof and central oculus lighting the space. This ancient temple-turned-church is a masterpiece of engineering and the resting place of famed artist Raphael.
Palazzo Madama in Rome is a historic Baroque palace, originally built in the 16th century, and is now home to the Italian Senate. Known for its elegant design and grand courtyard, it is a prominent example of Roman aristocratic architecture and a symbol of Italy's political history.
San Luigi dei Francesi, near Piazza Navona in Rome, is famed for its stunning Contarelli Chapel, which houses three masterpieces by Caravaggio depicting the life of St. Matthew. This French national church dazzles with Baroque art and architecture, drawing visitors to marvel at Caravaggio’s dramatic style.
Sant'Agostino, near Piazza Navona, dazzles with Caravaggio’s Madonna di Loreto and Raphael’s fresco of Isaiah, blending Renaissance art with Roman charm in a single stunning space.

The house of Caravaggio's most scandalous model, Lena.
The house of the most controversial baroque painter, Caravaggio.
Palazzo Borghese, located near the Spanish Steps in Rome, is a Baroque palace once home to the influential Borghese family. Il Circolo della Caccia (The Hunting Club) was a secretive, elite club established in the 17th century by the Borghese family, centered in Palazzo Borghese. It was a gathering place for noblemen and intellectuals, where they would engage in discussions, art exhibitions, and private hunting activities. The club was known for its exclusivity, attracting the most influential figures of the time, and is often associated with the Borghese family's connection to the cultural and political elite.

Jacopo is a great guide, he explained very clearly and easy to understand.
This tour was great! Rome and all its history layered on top of each other can be overwhelming. Focusing on the story of Carrivaggio and his time was a great idea! This was a fun and engaging tour and Jacopo was a warm, engaging, and very knowledgeable guide. Highly recommend
Thank you Ivan, very good tour in Rome to discover Caravaggio
Excellent and very interesting experience. The guide was great, highly recommended!
Great and interesting tour. Tour guide Ivan was great.
We had Jacobo as a guide. He told funny, exciting and passionate about Caravaggio his paintings and his life. I was already very interested in Caravaggio but not my husband. But because of the explanation about his paintings the story and passion it was told with, he also liked it very much. We had already done a tour with them the day before with another guide. Great, too. Had we stayed longer in Rome we would have followed more tours of this group of enthusiastic storytellers
I was VERY disappointed to receive a text 1 hour prior to my tour saying it had been cancelled. Rome was chaotic because of the holiday, the giro d'Italia , the strikes, the heat and the normal mass tourism. I made an effort to come in from the coast (Ostia) only to be cancelled with NO reason , why was the tour cancelled? If I can make the effort to arrive can the tour operator not make the effort to give a reason for the cancel. I won't book again with this group.
We strongly disagree with this review, as it does not accurately reflect what happened. The statement that the tour was cancelled "with no reason" is simply incorrect. On the morning of the tour, we made multiple attempts to contact you using the phone number and WhatsApp details provided in your booking. Neither method was working, and we received no response. We then contacted you directly through Viator to explain the situation and request confirmation of your participation. Unfortunately, we did not receive any reply until the following day. As this was a tip-based tour and you were the only guest booked for that departure, confirmation was required in order for the tour to operate. After several unsuccessful attempts to reach you through all available channels, the tour was rescheduled. We understand that traveling from Ostia took time and effort. However, references to the heat, holiday crowds, strikes, the Giro d'Italia, and mass tourism are unrelated to the reason the tour was rescheduled and are factors completely outside our control. We take communication with our guests very seriously and have records of our attempts to contact you before the tour. For that reason, we do not believe it is fair to claim that no explanation was provided when multiple messages were sent and no response was received.
The best walking tour we have done so far. Ivan was not only extremely entertaining, but he also did a great job of introducing us to the art and life of Caravaggio.
Filled with a wealth of detailed knowledge about the painter Caravaggio and his life, we were able to admire original artworks in the churches of Rome. The highlight of the tour is the lively presentation by the tour guides Ivan and Simone, both of whom can tell stories with captivating enthusiasm!! I have already done the tour twice with friends and highly recommend it!!
It was a great tour. The guide was very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, energetic and fun. The tour is well paced, giving enough time for viewing, listening the guide and asking questions. Great experience overall. Thank you!
