The Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, commonly known as Batalha Monastery, is one of the most beautiful works of Portuguese and European architecture, erected in thanksgiving from King D. João I for the important victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota that assured him the throne, his construction lasted for about 150 years and is mostly Gothic and Manueline with Renaissance style notes. Conquered from the Moors in 1148, Óbidos has remained under Portuguese rule since then, this small village had in medieval times just over 150 inhabitants who lived mainly from agricultural activities, the small fortified village was used as a wedding dowry for successive queens who managed it, taking from there their financial benefits. Today Óbidos is a picturesque village with a romantic and intimate air that transports us to medieval times with a touch of modernity, tourism is now its livelihood.

This was our first visit in Lisbon and we signed up for several privately guided day tours this week, including this private tour to Fatima, Nazare and Obidos. We can’t praise Jorge Mesquita enough! We thoroughly enjoyed our full day trip with lots of interesting insights (including a delightful stop at San Martino de Porto, a picturesque fishing village outside Nazare for lunch). Not only is Jorge most engaging and fun to spend the day with, he is also one of the most reliable, organised and efficient operators we’ve met. No spinning but a direct and honest guy. Our tour with Jorge Mesquita was excellent. He exceeded our expectations. We hired Jorge to take us from Lisboa to Porto with stops in Nazare and Obidos. He surprised us with additional stops at the Batalha Monastery and Aveiro. Jorge is a knowledgeable tour guide. He gave us great information about the places we visited. This is a kind of diferent tour, Fátima is a peaceful place to be, we love that TJ sugestion. We love meet the sanctuary and stay in the square just us and that peace... Our guide Jorge show us everything and tell us all the history of de place and Fátima apparitions, we love to Batalha monastery and Óbidos. Jorge was always a very kindness and knowlwge guide, its our 3 trip whith him. Tks for all, we want retourn to new adventures in Portugal.
