Itinerary
This is the ideal tour that will take you away from the city chaos of Rome, for an inspiring countryside & cultural experience in Tivoli. This small town, located approximately 50 minutes drive from Rome, is home to Villa Adriana (Hadrian’s villa) and Villa d’Este which are both UNESCO World Heritage sites and masterpieces of opulence and delight. Your private guide will tell you how the “Ancient Versailles”, the Villa of Hadrian, was covered by wood and wild vegetation once abbandoned after the decline of the Roman empire and how the various marbles were recycled and used to build other complexes. Hadrian was the most widely travelled emperor as well as as amateur architect and the villa is full of innovative designs based on iconic places he had visited throughout the empire. Walk where thermal baths and dining halls became like wild greenhouses, feel the romantic estrangement that the Emperor sought when he created his Villa, marking the soil with beauty, forever.
Your private tour guide and driver will then take you to Villa d’Este, the most daring landscape building of the Renaissance, designed for Cardinal Ippolito d’Este by architects who forced a natural creek to run between thousand of fountains before reaching the valley. The intricate pattern carved by the waters makes a huge waterfall on the marble-tiled plain, often creating rainbow effects and blowing the pipes of a water organ, which plays at given times. This is a perfect opportunity to learn about the lavish and extravagant lifestyle of rich noble families during the Renaissance! At the end of the tour, the driver will take you back to your accommodation, or if you prefer, to any other location in Rome.

Well worth the expense. Pete was a great guide and driver to prepare us for both Adrians and the fountains.
We're delighted that you enjoyed your Tivoli experience. Peter is truly exceptional, and we're very pleased to hear that he helped make your visit to Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este so memorable. We hope to welcome you back to Italy soon!
Pasqualino is magnificent. He is knowledgeable and enjoyed teaching about this treasure. Very Physical
Thank you very much for your kind words. We will be sure to pass your lovely feedback on to him, it will mean a great deal. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you again in Italy in the future!
Valentina is a great tour guide! She has a true passion for art history and architecture. Her English is also very good, which is important when taking a tour in a foreign country. Our driver, Paolo, was very professional, friendly, and punctual! My family and I have been to Rome many times, so we were looking for an off the beaten path excursion. We were so fortunate to have found this tour of Hadrian’s Villa and Villa d’Este. Both sites remain hidden gems of Roman history, art, and architecture and are underrated. Hadrian’s Villa (Villa Adriana), as the name suggests, was built by the Emperor Hadrian. He is best known for Hadrian’s Wall. Hadrian’s Villa is a remarkable example of early Roman architecture, and Villa d’Este is a testament to the beauty of Renaissance architecture and the ingenuity of Renaissance engineering. The gardens and especially the many fountains of Villa d’Este are truly magical. If you and your family are looking to experience Roman architectural marvels other than the Colosseum and Pantheon, I’d recommend that you take this tour. There is a lot of walking though, but you and your family will not be disappointed!
Thank you for sharing your experience with us! We are truly grateful to hear your kind word and delighted that you and your family enjoyed the tour and appreciate Valentina’s knowledge and guidance. It means a lot to know that the tour met your expectations. Valentina and Paolo will be happy to hear your kind feedback. It was a pleasure to host you and your family and we hope to have you again in the future.
Except for being expensive, our tour guide and driver were exceptional. It would have been more reasonable if it included a light snack since it was 6 hrs altogether.
The tour guide and driver were great and they did a very good job in getting us to/from Rome and the attractions. The tour guide was able to tailor to what we expected to see in the places we were visiting. As I have mentioned in another review of a tour on Viator, it is MUCH better to hire a private tour guide and driver because you get the experience of the tour you would not get on a group tour.
Thank you so much for your feedback! It is indeed an undervalued attraction and we are looking forward to promote it in every possible way! Arrivederci!
Our wonderful guide Georgea picked us up at our hotel in Rome for a fantastic day trip to visit Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa. Georgea was a perfect guide, very knowledgeable and super friendly, making for a memorable day visiting two wonderful historic sites in Tivoli. Thank you for a lovely day, Georgea! You brought ancient Italy alive for us!
