The famous Marian Sanctuary of Fatima is without a doubt one of the largest pilgrimage centers in the world. Millions of people come here annually to pay homage to the three shepherd children who witnessed the apparitions of the Virgin Mary in the fields of “Cova da Iria”. Free time to attend Mass (optional), visit the Chapel of the Apparitions where you can see the statue of Our Lady of Fatima. We will also visit the Basilica where we can find the tombs of Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco (the last two were canonized by Pope Francis in May 2017, thus becoming the youngest saints of the Catholic Church). As we continue, we will visit the modern church of the Blessed Trinity of Fatima, which seats 8,633 people and has an area of 40,000 m2. The church was designed and projected by the Greek architect, Alexandros Tombazis. You can shop for religious items for you, your family and friends.
The Monastery of Batalha was ordered to be built by King João I to celebrate the Portuguese victory of the famous battle of Aljubarrota in 1385. This UNESCO World Heritage Site monument is one of the best examples of European Gothic architecture, in its last stages. The interior houses the Church of “Santa Maria da Vitória”, the highest in Portugal with an amazing 32,5 meters in height. This monastery , symbol of the Portugal’s national pride is without a doubt one of the most beautiful models of Portuguese medieval architecture.
In the last century, the old fishing village of Nazare became one of the most sought after beach resorts by Portuguese tourists to spend their summer. The wonderful white sandy beaches of enormous length captivate all those who come through here, whether to enjoy a weekend or simply to have a great delicious meal by the sea. But Nazare became known worldwide because of its giant waves in “Praia Norte”. The world record was conquered here for surfing a giant 29- meter wave by Garret McNamara, an American from the state of Hawaii. Stop for photo taking.
The town of Obidos is an ancient Roman city that continued flourishing even after the fall of the empire due to the huge commercial activity of products done by sea. During the Middle Ages, a wall was built around it after being conquered by the first king of Portugal, Afonso I. Obidos is the best example of a medieval town in Portugal. As we walk through this walled town, we go back in time and find narrow cobblestone alleys, houses with secular facades painted in white, a lively shopping area, and a number of churches that were built throughout the centuries. Here, we can imagine travelling back to the time of kings and queens. We get the sensation of the battles fought here for every piece of land. We won’t leave without tasting the famous “Ginga de Obidos”, a local sweet liquor served on a small chocolate cup.

Just because you pay more for a private tour doesn’t always mean you will have your tour guide with you at each stop. We had hoped for a guide. Someone to show us around the place and explain history., It was disappointing that our guide only spoke to us during the drive and we had to explore on our own each stop. This led to waisted time and lack of information. We could have just taken a cheaper tour or rented a car. Tour guide was very nice and safe driver but we craved the entire guide experience the “private” tour are known for.

Jorgé met us at our hotel and we went to Fatima! His English was perfect! He was informative along the way and explained the different sites within the grounds of the basilica. He gave us plenty of time to see and do what we needed to experience all of Fatima, in spite of very limited parking since the next day was October 13th. From there we went to Batalho and he gave us so much specific and coordinated information about the history of the church and the times leading up to it! He explained that it is the tallest church in Europe and royalty has been married there for centuries. From there we went to Nazarene to view the ocean and learn of the incredible waves that come in February/March. We went into the beautiful church and learned about the origin of the other small chapel in honor of Mary who saved the nobleman. Finally we went to Obidos and we had ample time to wander, shop and try Ginja in a chocolate cup! One of my favorite tours!! Thanks Jorgé! Highly recommended!

Jorge, who we booked a private day tour was not only a gracious guide but a proud ambassador to his country. I was reluctant to book a tour with a company I have never heard of but from the time I had made the initial contact through email, Jorge was honest, prompt and responded very efficiently to all my questions and concerns. The tour was for 7 of us and he gave more than enough time to leisurely explore each sites. Aside from his knowledge and history of the different places, I also appreciated his reminders regarding VAT during our stop at Fatima. His Mercedes van was comfortable and from the time we started at 9 in the morning to about 6pm, his demeanor remained even killed and kind despite the fact that he was driving for the last 9 hours! We made two tours with the Première Tours one of them leaving from Lisbon a private tour for me and my sister, the punctual and efficient guide Sandra excellent driver took us to Fatima, Battle, Nazaré and Óbidos a lovely day! Leaving Porto we went to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, where we met the ancient city, Cripta Cathedral, a magical city. Our guides Mr. Carlos amable punctual with great historical knowledge.
