Itinerary

Pass by

Depart from anywhere in the Greater Lisbon area on this no-rush tour. The tour departs directly for picturesque Óbidos. Expect a short, comfortable highway trip of around 60 minutes. You will travel all day through Western Portugal, always in the breeze of the Atlantic coast.

Pass by

With Lisbon behind us, suddenly a rocky hill topped with a castle rises on the horizon - it's Óbidos. A land of historical importance and heritage, of beauty and authenticity. A land with a past prior to the very foundation of the Kingdom of Portugal. And curiously, the land offered as a marriage dowry to several of those who became queens of Portugal.

60 min

One of the town's main attractions is its medieval castle, which dates back to the 12th century. Also dating from the 12th century, you'll discover the church of Santa Maria, located in Óbidos' main square, with beautiful Manueline and Gothic architecture. Inside, you can admire the ornate decorations and historic works of art. The entire medieval town is surrounded by well-preserved medieval walls, offering excellent views of the surrounding countryside. You can take a pleasant stroll along the ramparts and admire the landscape. The town's narrow, cobbled streets are lined with charming whitewashed houses adorned with colorful flowers, creating a picturesque setting that is perfect for exploring on foot. The town is also known for its craft stores selling local handicrafts, ceramics and souvenirs. Here it will be hard to resist grabbing a souvenir.

Admission included10 min

(TASTING) Of course... you won't want to miss the opportunity to taste Óbidos' famous liqueur, Ginjinha, made from sour cherries and served in chocolate cups. Just enjoy it. It's on us.

Pass by

Alcobaça town follows. There we will take a guided and very easy walk through the beautiful historic center that besides all the heritage and authenticity is also the place of the union of two rivers that originated the name of the town. Just imagine that this rivers union hidden spot is called the Garden of Love. Curious to know more?

60 min

As we walk through the historic center you will love snapping pictures of the tiny bridges and the local houses that emerge from the banks and border the rivers. A few steps further you'll come across the 12th century Royal Abbey and the Monastery of Alcobaça, a UNESCO heritage site. We'll visit the impressive 900-year gothic Abbey where you'll discover two carved stone tombs, probably the most beautiful you've ever seen, and you'll learn about a beautiful yet tragic love story. Definitely a must-see.

10 min

(TASTING) To go to Alcobaça and not try traditional and ancient pastries would be a serious sin. Why you'll taste the sweet "cornucópias", a typical and award-winning pastry. Just enjoy it. It's on us.

Admission not included45 min

(OPTIONAL) If you feel like it, you may visit to the Monastery of Alcoabaça, a UNESCO heritage site.

Pass by

(OPTIONAL) It's lunchtime. Although it is not included in the tour program, we have set aside time in the program for it. We'll take care of these details once you've booked the tour.

60 min

Head now for picturesque and seaside Nazaré. You'll stroll at the promontory, known as Sitio, where a good handful of must-see attractions await you within walking distance. Just to mention a few, you'll visit the stunning 110-meters-high Suberco viewpoint, the curious Chapel of the Miracle's Memory and it's cave, and the 14th century Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazareth, the first sanctuary in Portugal, where you'll discover something curious.

Admission included60 min

(Entrance ticket is included) If you feel like it, we can walk to the 16th century Fort and nowadays Surf Museum, built on top of the cliff and overlooking the Nazaré Canyon, where the legendary Giant Waves, 30-meter (100-foot) high waves, take place. Actually the biggest surfable waves in the world. Did you know the Guinness world record for the largest wave ever surfed has been broken here several times and is currently set at 26.21 meters (85.99 ft)?

30 min

You also won't want to miss Nazaré's golden sandy beach, where you'll learn about local traditions. You'll enjoy meeting the Varinas, the local women dressed in their seven colorful skirts. By the way... They can be a bit cheeky sometimes!

40 min

We continue along the coastline to the amazing shell-shaped bay of São Martinho do Porto and head down to the harbor to discover a fossilized curiosity millions of years old. Here is the spot where you may feel like sampling some fresh seafood and sparkling wine by the sea.

Admission not included45 min

(OPTIONAL) With the sea always in sight, the trip continues to make one last stop, hopefully at sunset, at the beautiful Foz do Arelho beach, to enjoy the scenery, relax and even put your feet up on the sand while having a drink or an ice cream right on the beach.

10 min

After relaxation, we set off towards Lisbon along the edge of Óbidos Lagoon, where you'll see typical fishing boats, local shellfish gatherers and, eventually, colonies of flamingos. It's a very beautiful route to end our journey and it'll be hard not to ask to stop the car to take the last photos.

Pass by

Back to the Lisbon area. The journey takes between 10 and 12 hours, depending on the optional visits you make and whether you decide to have lunch on site. As a matter of transparency, we would like to inform you that in addition to the added time of 5 hours given to the attractions listed in the itinerary, the remaining 6 to 8 hours announced refer to: 6 hours for the total travel time, and the other 2 hours for the total time of the moments listed as optional. By the way... we'd like you to know that by choosing us you're choosing a free tour for children under 11 and a 100% sustainable car trip, as all GHG emissions generated are fully offset. Remark: The sighting of the world's biggest surfable waves, over 30 meters high (+100 ft), can be enjoyed mainly between November and March. This event, although frequent during this period, is always subject to favorable weather conditions, so giant waves sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Marco is the man!

Marco customized a two-day experience for us that included transfer from Lisbon to Porto with stops in Óbidos and Nazaré en route and a day trip from Porto to Douro Valley which far exceeded my expectations. From start to finish, his professionalism, knowledge, and genuine passion for sharing Portugal's beauty and history made this an unforgettable adventure - even through the rain. The transfer from Lisbon to Porto was elevated by Marco's inclusion of stops in the medieval town of Óbidos and the coastal village of Nazaré. His deep knowledge of Portuguese history and culture brought each location to life. And his timing was perfect - allowing us to fully experience each destination without feeling rushed but keeping the day moving forward. He even knew the perfect spots to duck into when the rain was too heavy. Marco's expertise truly shone during our Douro Valley day trip from Porto. His insider knowledge of the region's best viewpoints, quintas, and hidden gems created a magical experience that we never could have achieved on our own or on a crowded tour bus. He struck the perfect balance between providing fascinating commentary and allowing us quiet moments to soak in the breathtaking scenery. Beyond his extensive knowledge, Marco was easy to talk to and kept us entertained with his humor, anticipated our needs (even letting me nap in the car), and offered excellent restaurant recommendations that provided authentic local flavors. He ensured our comfort throughout both days (having snacks and ponchos at the ready), and his comfortable vehicle made the longer drives enjoyable. If you're looking for a tour guide who goes above and beyond to create a truly personalized and memorable Portuguese experience, Marco is exceptional. Highly recommend!

Best day! Best Tour Guide!

Huge shout-out to Marco for making our family vacation one of the best we've ever had. This was my first time booking with Marco but not my last. He was extremely professional, creative and quick to respond. We were looking for a unique and active experience since we had 5 teenagers with us and he delivered. The off-road buggy excursion was a huge hit along with finishing the day on the beach while the kids surfed and we sipped on yummy drinks. Throughout the day I felt like Marco was part of our family. He was kind and accommodating, right from picking us up at our front door, which was a pedestrian only road, to our return. I also loved the fact that he got special access to drive up to certain places instead of having to walk. Huge relief as others were battling the heat walking we were in air conditioned comfort. Marco's knowledge of history made places we visited come to life. The day couldn't have been more perfect. I have done many tours in my travels and this one sits at the top of my list. Can't wait until we return. So much to see and do and stress free.

We had a wonderful experience on the Nazaré, Óbidos, and Alcobaça Full Day Private Tour from Lisbon. Traveling with the Amity Family truly elevated the day—their passion for Portugal’s history, thoughtful commentary, and warm, personal approach made the tour both informative and incredibly enjoyable. What really stood out was the flexibility we were given to tailor the day to our pace and interests. We were able to adjust timing, spend more time in the places that spoke to us, and even end the day a bit earlier without ever feeling rushed or like we were missing out.

Operator response

Thank you very much for your evaluation and extraordinary review. It was a pleasure to take you and your family on tour. We love to hear that you enjoyed it.

Visit to Obidos, Alcobaça, Nazaré, Caldas Da Rainha and Sao Martinho Do Porto

We liked Marco’s kindness, his knowledge of the places we visited, his openness to make changes to our schedule so that we could immerse ourselves a little more in Portuguese culture and show us places that are practically not touristic. His conduct was impeccable. Really a very nice day. Thanks again!

Operator response

Merci.

Private Tour with Marco

An intuitive and experienced guide/driver, flexible and quick on his feet to amend and, add to, the itinerary made the trip memorable. Ask to see the towns he frequents for fresh produce, daily needs. The restaurant we went to for lunch, Restaurant Antonio Padeiro, and the quick stop for Pao De Lo (a very local cake), Casa do Pao de Lo de Alfeizerão in between the main tourist attractions added much flavours to the Portuguese experiences. Thanks Marco ! 😁

Operator response

Thank you for your appreciation. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to show you the main attractions of this region and beyond and I am particularly happy to have fulfilled your special requests and made the tour memorable. Going with you to the local open-air market for fresh products and local delicacies was fun. I'm sure you'll appreciate the many delicacies you took back to Singapore. Thanks👏 👏 👏
