Description
Take a stroll through the commercial and political centre of 18th and 19th century Lisbon. It was in this direction that the city expanded from the hill of the Castle. Get to know the downtown area (“Baixa Pombalina”) accurately rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake, which had its epicentre in the Arch of Rua Augusta and kept Carmo on its feet, despite the catastrophe. Have a close look at the wonders of the Portuguese baroque in the Church of São Roque and move up into the 19th century in Chiado. As distinguished and bourgeois as its cafés, theatres, bookshops and art deco façades that stretch through Príncipe Real, the city’s trendiest quarter, and the amazing S. Pedro de Alcântara Garden. Just across the street, take a look at the popular Bairro Alto, which completely changes at night. We stop for a few minutes at the picturesque Rua da Bica and then at the Adamastor viewpoint to feel the Tejo estuary in all its splendour and we go down towards the National Parliament.

Known as one of the most graceful and garnished churches of Lisbon, the church of São Roque dates from the 16th century and it was among the first Jesuit churches in the world. Most of the chapels are made in Baroque style.

Also know as Adamastor because of a huge statue of the mythical figure created by Camões to symbolise the Cape of Tormen, it is in vouge among the youngest generation, the perfect spot to enjoy the sunset with a drink and good music.
Assembleia da Republica
Dates from 1779 and it was the first carmelite church in the world dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. After delighting in its spectacular architecture, you will understand why you can’t leave Lisbon without visiting the Basílica da Estrela.

We had a fantastic day with Tiago! From the moment he picked us up at our hotel we knew it would be a great day. Such a fun and educational day. We really covered so much during our 4 hour tour. We even got to stop at a local coffe shop and bakery. It’s always nice to find the “non tourist” spots. We would highly recommend Tiago if you’re visiting Lisbon. You will not be disappointed.

I was with two tall men- we should have asked for a vehicle with more leg room. Tour guide João was very good.
