Excellent food tour with a passionate guide.

We participated in a food tour in Lisbon with my partner and my mother-in-law. Since we were the only ones registered, we had a private tour with Carlos, a friendly and very knowledgeable guide. The tour combined tastings and the discovery of the neighborhood's history, which made the experience truly complete. The only point to note: the walking pace was sometimes a bit fast for my 75-year-old mother-in-law. We ended up in a small authentic restaurant, frequented only by locals, where we ate excellent curry shrimp. The visit to the Campo de Ourique market was also a very pleasant moment. An activity that I recommend for discovering Lisbon in a different way.

Our guide, Fileppe, was...

Our guide, Fileppe, was very nice and gave us much history of the area. However, there were only three of us (two of my friends who had paid got ill and could not attend) and we are ages 60, 70 and 75 and the pace was a little fast for us. There was a restaurant that had many steps which made it a little difficult for my friend who has slight mobility issues. The first bakery tastings were excellent, the second had one sampling that was far too sweet for us. The third tasting offered two very sweet offerings, as well. A waste of our money since we had told our guide that we didn't like extremely sweet samples. A lot of walking was involved in areas with construction going on, so it was bit noisy. Overall, not a good value for the money

Operator response

Dear Carol, I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed Felippe’s company and found the historical insights valuable. However, I am sorry to hear that the pace and some of the tastings were not a perfect fit for your group. We truly appreciate your feedback as it helps us refine our experience for guests of all ages. I would like to provide some context regarding your experience: -Pace and Mobility: We understand that Lisbon’s hilly terrain and stairs can be a challenge. While Felippe aimed to maintain a steady rhythm to respect the schedules of our partners, who prepare fresh items specifically for our arrival time, we take your comments on mobility very seriously and will review our route to better accommodate guests who prefer a more relaxed pace. -Authenticity and Sweetness: Our morning tours are specifically designed to reflect authentic Portuguese culinary habits. In Portugal, the morning culture is deeply rooted in "Doçaria Conventual" (traditional pastries), which are famously sugar-forward. We choose these specific tastings to provide a truly genuine experience of how locals enjoy their city. While we understand that this level of sweetness may not suit every palate, our goal is to remain faithful to the local culture. -Efforts to Accommodate: We always strive to be flexible. When Felippe realized the traditional egg-based sweets were not to your liking, he worked with our partners to offer an almond-based pastry as an alternative. Furthermore, even though we were only informed of your friends' absence at the meeting point, we were happy to provide extra treats for you to take back to them so they could still participate in the experience from afar. Our mission is to provide an authentic window into Lisbon’s soul through its food and history. While we realize that tradition isn't always to everyone's taste, we stand by these local partners who represent the heart of our city. Thank you again for your honesty, and we wish you the very best. Best regards, Benjamin Food Lover Tour Lisbon

Delicious, Authentic, Local

A big thank you to Nathalia. The tour was wonderful. The food we were allowed to taste was delicious. The olive oil and nuts were sensational. Thank you. Book the tour gladly at the beginning of the trip. Unfortunately, mine was postponed to another day.

Highly recommend!

It was a great tour! We lucked out with only 4 in our tour group and Philippe was a great tour guide. The food we tasted was SOOO good and the neighborhood we toured was really fun and yet quite eclectic.

Tasteful walk in a less touristy area in Lisbon

Tasteful walk in less touristy district in Lisbon where belly is well filled. Start with delicious sweets with a cup of coffee in a well-attended ‘cafeteria’. Then to a popular market hall with stops at some stalls. In between a sweet bite, and then a tasty lunch in a restaurant that you would never enter as a tourist. Pasteis de nata close the walk. With a lot of (historical) facts as an extra, the three hours are over without you realizing it.
