In the 16th century, this square did not exist, with most of its area occupied by the Hospital Real de Todos os Santos, the most important in Lisbon. After the great earthquake of 1755, which destroyed most of the city, the hospital was greatly damaged and was demolished around 1775. The large area previously occupied by the hospital was turned into an open market square, and in the late 19th century, a large covered market was built. Officially named King Pedro the 4th square, Rossio translates as a large gathering space. Surrounded by 19th and early 20th century buildings, this square is dedicated to the restoration of the independence of Portugal, december 1st. 1640, after sixty years of Spanish domination. Sebastião José de carvalho e Melo, was the state secretary of King D. José I at the time of the 1755 earthquake.
