Historic Walking Tour Through Lisbon’s Oldest Neighborhood

Alfama is not only one of the oldest and most picturesque districts in Lisbon, but also was one of the only neighbourhoods, which was not destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. And so, the city still has kept its quaint familial charm. In fact, the moniker of this neighbourhood comes from the Arabic ‘Al-hamma’ meaning ‘hot fountains’ or ‘baths’. Decorated in beautiful ‘azulejos’, the steep winding alleys of this neighbourhood give way to breath-taking views of a sea of terracotta roofs and the Tagus River. The aromas of traditional Portuguese cuisine, the echoes of Fado tunes, and the elderly Portuguese locals chattering, all make this neighbourhood one of the most authentic in Lisbon! Our tour begins in Rossio and passes some key areas before heading into the heart of Alfama where you will also make a stop at the Miradouro Portas do Sol, before ending the tour at the cathedral.

El Castillo de San Jorge is a historic castle in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, located in the parish of Santa Maria Maior. The human occupation of the hill of the castle dates back to at least VIII BC. C., even though the first fortifications built date bakc to the first century BC.

Jack was a superb guide, albeit a bit shaky on guitar legends from his hometown. He started with a very helpful introduction and went on from there to cover just about everything we wanted to know in 2.5 hours. It was a long hot climb but the stop for the excellent pastel de nata and the benelyn like ginga were well judged. We got a lot out of it. We followed up on several of his suggestions and they worked

Tour is very reasonable price but they The tour offers a reasonable price, but they will ask you to leave a tip of approximately €5 or more at the end. Therefore, it is not entirely complimentary. Additionally, conducting thorough research beforehand can prevent you from needing to take this tour.
