Campo de Ourique, Lisbon Coolest Quarter - Private Walking Tour

Description
Campo de Ourique is one of the most original and vibrant neighborhoods in Lisbon. It’s a densely populated borough, where the prevailing demography is middle-class with a strong emphasis on liberal professions. By today’s standards it’s probably the most sought after quarter to inhabit and enjoy a high standard of living in the Portuguese capital. New spaces and business opportunities emerge all the time. Nevertheless traditional retail is still very much alive. Campo de Ourique remains a village in the heart of the city, but it’s also becoming a very cosmopolitan and trendy neighborhood - the kind of unique combination the entire Lisbon would like to have in the 21st century.

First, Luis spoke excellent English and arrived on time for our private tour. Despite not living in Campo de Ourique, Luis had good knowledge of the neighborhood. It wasn't too much walking and the terrain was relatively flat. We were disappointed that the tour was scheduled to be 3-4 hours but only lasted 2 hours. We acknowledge this is not a typical tour most tourists would take however, we didn't go INSIDE any of the free buildings such as the church, the market and didn't actually go to the cemetery. Overall, we learned about a potential neighborhood in which we were considering living in.
Thank you so much to take the time to write this very detailed and fair review. Although, let me add,, we started earlier than expected, so the tour certainly lasted more than 2 hours. This tour usually takes longer because we stop somewhere in the middle to have coffee and talk, or take photos, but I got the impression that you weren’t too interested in that kind of interaction. In any case, I'll send you more information, answer your questions and talk about Lisbon. It was good to meet you and I hope to see you again soon!
Our private tour guide, Luis, was very knowledgeable and friendly. He provided a wonderful tour of the old and the newer neighborhoods of Campo de Ourique. He also suggested good restaurants and the award-winning pastel de nato shop. This was an off-the-beaten track tour that I would highly recommend after you have seen all the other major tourist sites.
It's a pleasure and a privilege to have visitors interested in going beyond the cliches. It's for people like you that I really want to show Lisbon. Thank you so much.
A very nice residential neighborhood with some typical services that you would expect, including some good restaurants. You can get here from the lower town via a tram. Nice place to stroll to see how the middle class lives.
Our guide, a journalist and teacher, was incredibly knowledgeable about the history of the Campo de Ourique neighborhood, leading us through the streets and behind doors to reveal its hidden treasures. Highly recommend.
Thank you so much for your kind words, it was pleasure to spend the afternoon with you in Campo de Ourique. I’d be happy to help if you need more information, or if I can help in any other way.
Detailed, tailored personal tour of Campo de Ourique. We moved to this neighborhood earlier this year but wanted to know more about the history of the area. Lus is very knowledgeable and showed us some interesting places that we had walked past a quite a few times but never noticed before.
Thank you so much for your review. It is a pleasure to "welcome" new inhabitants of Campo de Ourique who clearly already like the neighborhood as if they were born here.
The Campo do Ourique covered market is really very pleasant and affordable in terms of price. The atmosphere is much more Lisbon than the time out. We tried both. I highly recommend.
Luis is a remarkable historian, curator and enjoyable story teller, as well as sociable and gracious. His research and knowledge was stunning, we were truly captured by his mastery and the progression of the tour. We learned and saw so much that we wouldn’t have noticed walking the neighborhood by ourself. It’s such a vibrant community and knowing the history brought the past to life. Our Portuguese is limited to ola and obrigrada, Luis impressed us with his fluent English. We highly recommend this tour..and will be scheduling more tours with Luis in our future. Obrigada Luis…we had such a great day.
Such a lovely afternoon I spent with you2 in Campo de Ourique. Thank you so much for your generous review and I hope we'll meet again in the near future! Even if we don't, I'll be glad to try to answer your questions (all my contacts are in the flyer I gave you). Best regards, Luis
We could not have asked for a better tour guide than Luis - interesting, knowledgeable and flexible to ensure we were seeing and learning what interested us most on the tour. We highly recommend Luis and hope to do more of his walking tours in future.
Our guide was very knowledgeable, took us to unexpected places and painted the historical background of tge neighbourhood. He was very nice and his English very good. Recommend!!
You're so kind Eke. I wish you and your family a wonderful life in your new Lisbon address. Best regards Luís Maio here's a list of suggestions of restaurants in Campo de Ourique (I wrote this for a guide a couple of years ago): "Campo de Ourique market started a new chapter in 2013 as a gourmet hub revolving around a new food court with alternative stalls side by side with traditional groceries. Otherwise Campo de Ourique is nowadays one of the Lisbon quarters with the highest concentration of trendy restos. It’s a scene that has its popular institutions, lifelong restaurants like Cervejaria Europe, famed for its grouper head, Verde Gaio and its legendary grills, Casa dos Passarinhos, notable for the fried cuttlefish, or the inexpensive but always reliable Trempe and Imperial de Campo de Ourique. The neighborhood also excels in restaurants inspired by Portuguese regional cuisines such as Parreira do Minho (northeastern Portugal), Magano and its high class recipes of Alentejo (south), or Pigmeu where the pig is king. Campo de Ourique has, on the other hand, a remarkable offer of chef/gourmet restaurants, recommended among the best knife and fork experiences in town. It is worth mentioning Peixaria da Esquina and Tasca da Esquina, both by chef Vítor Sobral, and the Italians La Bottega, Memoria and Fiammetta (also has a fine grocery). The latter fit into the world cuisine rank, otherwise a rapidly growing trend in a neighborhood which already has the French Raffi’s Bagel, the Japanese Hikidashi and the Macau Dim Sum. But Campo de Ourique is also one of the rare districts in Lisbon where one goes with the sole purpose of having coffee and eating a sweet. Among the more popular addresses is Aloma, several times voted in the best custard tart category, Bolo da Cozinhomania, labeled ‘the best chocolate cake in the world’, Ponto Mais Doce da Cidade, specialized in brigadiers and macaroons, Dacquoise, which bets on French fine pastries, and O Moço dos Croissants (chef and owner Manuel Perestrelo opened more recently Qura, a restaurant with Portuguese dishes to share). Also new is Padaria da Esquina, where chef Vítor Sobral meets Mário Rolando, the ‘prophet of bread’" .
It is a very charming neighborhood of Lisbon. It is high, with beautiful squares, churches and seems to be a younger neighborhood due to the buildings present there.
Perspectiva interessante!
