Itinerary

Meeting place prior to start the tour

Admission included150 min

Your tour starts at a meeting location in Rome, where you’ll meet your guide, who provides your round-trip train ticket. Then hop aboard the train for the ride southwest of Rome to Ostia Antica, which lies near the coast. When you arrive, take a 2.5-hour leisurely walking tour through the ancient ruins, noting their highly preserved state for which this archaeological site is so renowned. Dating as far back as the 4th century BC, the ruins include structures like an amphitheater, the Forum of the Corporations, the Collegiate Temple, taverns and public baths. Once home to more than 100,000 people, Ostia was the port city of Ancient Rome. Walk along the main road, Decumanus Maximus, while your guide tells you stories about life in town. Admire the intact Roman statues that line the walkways; pass by the Baths of Neptune, crowned by a mosaic that depicts the Roman god of the sea behind a 4-hourse chariot; and take a seat in the amphitheater, which dates back to 12 BC and was built to hold 3,500 spectators. Shops and apartments make up some of the smaller buildings. When your time at the site is up, you’ll return to Rome by train.

Great tour of Ostia Antica

This was a very informative and enjoyable tour. Our tour guide was wonderful!! She was very knowledgeable and very engaging. Rome is filled with history and you don't have to go to Pompeii to see some Archeological ruins. If you have time while in Rome, you should definitely check out Ostia Antica.

A Vast Area to Explore

Insane how few people go to Ostia Antica, where there are no queues and it's a vast area to explore. Houses, villas, busnisses, temples, public buildings, restaurants, bathouses, lavatries...you name it, there's a ruin of it there. Rob was amazing as a guide and shared a lot of knowledge with us. Would recommend to anyone looking for that piece of history, without the major crowds.

Much confusion due to the delay of our guide. We called 2 times for up dates. Agent said they would call us but we never heard back. Finally tour guide showed up and was very apologetic. She said they should contact us about the delay, but no one called. She was wonderful, but the tour operator lacked in communication.

Ostia Antica may not be Pompeii but the mosaics are certainly worth it. Alberto was very warm and accomodating.

Best experience in Italy!

Alessandra was amazing. She guided us onto the train and back. Most importantly, she taught us all about the treasure that Ostia Antica is! If we come back, we are going on this tour again and requesting the same guide!!!

great tour!

great tour! Only 10 of us. We were given meeting point information, train tickets to and from the site. Our guide Robert was very knowledgeable and interesting. Loved getting ancient history lesson in a small group without the hordes of other tourists. Definitely recommend!

Immersive ruins!

This is a wonderful tour. Our guide Laura was knowledgeable and really knew the Ostia site well. Do not miss the museum, it’s wonderful. These ruins are more immersive than Pompeii and the crowds are much less. Highly recommend this tour!

Great tour!

Excelent tour with a most experienced and knowleageble guide, Laura. We were a small group of 8 people and that allowed us to profit from a true history class at our own pace. Loved it!

A highlight of our trip

I’m so glad we found this tour. Laura was so knowledgeable and engaging — the best guide we had in Rome. And the site was fascinating, beautiful and not at all crowded. We got out of the city for a morning and learned so much.
