Visit the church of Nossa Senhora dos Olivais, an important presence of the Templars in the city and where it was buried Dom Gualdim Pais.
Visit the Castle of Tomar, or Templars Castle, located at the top of the hill.
Inside the Templars Castle we will find the Convent of Christ, one of the chief works of the Portuguese Renaissance, considered World Heritage Monument by Unesco. Visit to discover some of its precious details, such as the depictions on the Renaissance portal, the unique symbolism of the Manueline Window in the Chapter Hall, the architectural details in the Main Cloister and the spaces connected to Templar rituals.
Visit the famous Window of the chapter inside the Convent of Christ. Splendor maximum of Manueline Art, full of references to the discoveries and the history of Portugal.
Arrive to Tomar and take an overview of the city.
Ride on the margins of the river and cross the Dam of Castelo do Bode.
Take a look on this called poem village where Luis de Camões lived. Panoramic view of the village and both rivers.
Visit Almourol castle located on a island in Tagus River. Take a small cruise to this Island and take a look at this incredible castle. On Mondays, has the Castle is closed, this activity is switch by a visit to Mira Daire Natural Caves.

What an absolutely wonderful day. Even with weather I would describe as “mixed”, my family (grandparents, me and my wife, and two kids, 7 and 4) has an absolute blast. This is the type of day you plan a vacation for. The sites were extremely accessible, rich in history and absolutely breathtaking. There was PLENTY history and detail to keep my academic in laws interested and more than enough traditional medieval iconography and settings to keep my children believing they were knights of the round table all day long (and - as a bonus, they learned some really cool history too). Of course, what really makes these tours special is the guide. Nuno was fantastic - extremely knowledgeable and personable, and most importantly (to me) - he was wonderful with the kids, and they absolutely loved him. The tours were engaging and interesting, and really reinforced one another - don’t hold me to it, but I think I could give a fairly accurate summary timeline of the shifting conquests in 12th century Portugal! 5 stars all around.

We booked a second private tour with Van Go and had Susana this time too. She is really good with kids and told us the legend of the Portuguese rooster and the story of Fatima as we traveled to and from our destinations. Our 10-year old daughter was entertained the entire time. Susana is local and pointed out the various industries and agricultural crops along our drive. This really helped to better understand the culture. Susana answered many questions from our daughter and is very knowledgeable of the Templar sites. The short boat ride to the river entrance of the Castle of Almourol and the Castle and Convent of the Order of Christ were fable-like places and a must for anyone interested in medieval castles or Templar lore. She surprised us again with a short stop in a small village for a local dessert. My only regret….we should have booked our excursion to Berlengas with Van Go Tourism and Susana rather than using a Google recommended company.
