Step back in time at The Petrified Forest in California, where ancient redwoods stand turned to stone. This geological marvel, nestled near Calistoga in Sonoma County, was created by volcanic eruptions from Mount Saint Helena over 3 million years ago. The eruptions buried the trees under ash, initiating a slow process of petrification. Today, visitors can explore pathways winding through the preserved forest, viewing these majestic tree fossils that tell a story of natural history and transformation.

This Winery stands as a pivotal figure in the region's wine history. It was here that founder Joe Martin introduced the first Merlot grapes in the 1970s, setting a precedent for excellence. Today, St. Francis's Merlot continues to headline their tasting menus, a testament to its enduring legacy. The winery also offers delightful food pairings, enhancing the wine-tasting experience.

Frog's Leap Winery epitomizes the blend of traditional winemaking practices with innovative, sustainable agriculture. Established in 1981 by John Williams and Larry Turley, the winery quickly distinguished itself by pioneering organic grape growing in Napa Valley, obtaining certification by 1989. The picturesque estate, complete with a restored 19th-century red barn, verdant gardens, and a tranquil pond, offers visitors a relaxing setting to taste wines and learn about organic viticulture.

Here, each bottle tells a story of meticulous cultivation and artisanal craftsmanship.

The Old Faithful Geyser is a striking natural spectacle known for its regular and predictable geothermal eruptions, sending boiling water and steam up to 60 feet into the air every 15 to 30 minutes. Located in a serene setting, the site is enhanced by a geology museum that educates visitors about the dynamics of geothermal activity. It also features a collection of rescue animals, adding to the attraction's educational and conservation appeal. The estate is marked by its distinct stone castle, nestled among lush vineyards and a serene private lake, offering a picturesque setting. Visitors can enjoy tours of the historic grounds, indulge in tastings of their celebrated wines, and explore the beautifully landscaped gardens, making it a cherished destination for wine lovers and history enthusiasts.

Napa wine guide

A little tricky to get the app installed and token applied even with instruction video. I wish on the map area that's starred, it would say what that location address is. It would make it easier to get on that starting point from wherever I am. I loved the route it took me on once I was on the way. Very informative and I learned alot. Great value.

Interesting history and info. Great tour!

The tour was great. We learned things we never knew, and are native to the area. We missed some turns due to short notice prompts to turn. We didn’t want to turn around up the highway, so we missed some of the tour as a result. Also there were points when the audio was interrupted when we hit another point of interest. Otherwise it was a great tour. The Napa Sonoma tour took us 3.5 hours and we only stopped once, so be ready to spend the day. Fun experience. I would do it again!

Operator response

Hi Christine, thanks for taking our Sonoma & Napa Valley audio tour. We’re so glad you enjoyed learning new history and local stories, especially as someone native to the area. We also appreciate the helpful feedback about the turn prompts and overlapping audio points — I’ll ask my team to review those sections of the route. It’s wonderful to hear you still had a fun experience overall and would take the tour again. We hope to join you on the road again soon!

Perfect GPS precision and great stories

This GPS audio tour is a game-changer for a scenic drive! The navigation was spot on, and the hands-free audio triggered perfectly as we reached each landmark. It was like having a local expert in the car telling us about the history and the landscape. Highly recommend if you want to see the sights at your own pace.
