Description

Take a stirring journey through art and religious history with skip-the-ticket-line entry to the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. Avoid the long ticket lines and enjoy your visit at your own pace. Wander through the Greek Cross Gallery to see elaborately carved sarcophagi that might just contain the earthly remains of some of antiquity's famous kings and queens. Peek at the Cabinet of the Masks, or tour the Sala degli Animali to see a virtual menagerie of fantastic beasts, real and imagined. Walk the Upper Galleries, including the Gallery of Maps, to see how cartographers depicted the world through the ages. See masterpieces by Renaissance masters in the Raphael Rooms, and rest in the Borgia Apartments for a while. Then, it’s time to marvel at Michelangelo’s exquisite Sistine Chapel, the crown jewel of the Vatican, and perhaps even of all the world’s art treasures.

Itinerary

90 min

The Vatican Museums are the public museums of Vatican City. They display works from the immense collection amassed by the Catholic Church and the papacy throughout the centuries, including several of the most well-known Roman sculptures and most important masterpieces of Renaissance art in the world. The museums contain roughly 70,000 works, of which 20,000 are on display and currently employ 640 people who work in 40 different administrative, scholarly, and restoration departments.

90 min

The Sistine Chapel is a chapel in the Apostolic Palace, the pope's official residence in Vatican City. Originally known as the Cappella Magna the chapel takes its name from Pope Sixtus IV, who had it built between 1473 and 1481. Since that time, the chapel has served as a place of both religious and functionary papal activity. Today, it is the site of the papal conclave, the process by which a new pope is selected. The fame of the Sistine Chapel lies mainly in the frescoes that decorate the interior, most particularly the Sistine Chapel ceiling and The Last Judgment, both by Michelangelo.

You have to wait for...

You have to wait for Viator to send you the tickets and not be worried. They arrive on WhatsApp with little advance notice.

Jewish Ghetto

It is a nice overview of the former Jewish ghetto and renaissance-era Jewish life. Not a lot of the former buildings remain, so it is a lot of pictures of previous buildings and explaining where they would fit in current landscape. The guide was well informed and pleasant.

You don’t actually “skip” the line. You just get in the line with people who also already have tickets. But it still saves a lot of time.

Hot!

Skip the line is definitely worth it. You need to be there only before your time as they call you in lots and check your timing. You could go only 30mins prior e.g. 1pm for 1.30pm. Peak summer and 36° was so hot, crowded... we ended up walking through galleries without too much engagement and lingered longer at the distine chapel. All in all, a very large collection of objects and the frescoes were amazing.

Not east to get your tickets, but otherwise good.

Not easy to get your tickets, they are not sent to you via email or similar. You have to find their office to get the tickets. This is inconvenient and time wasting. Other than that it's good.

Don’t buy any tickets from Viator

I bought three tickets skip the line Vatican museum. I received an email from the company confirming full payment and other information. I arrived at the Vatican skip the line entrance an hour earlier . There are three entrances. I approached one of the entrances and showed the guard the email I received from Viator . He asked me to call the company and request the electronic tickets. I called the company many times without any success. Then I had no other choice but to buy three other tickets from a nearby travel agent . Whoever is managing the company is doing a lousy job. I send an email using Viator website demanding a full refund.

Operator response

You arrived at the venue on the wrong date, which is why the entry was denied.

No line was skipped - overpriced

This was not a real “skip the line” experience. I am still not sure why we paid extra for this. We were actually in the longest of the three lines and waited over 30 min in the hot sun. This is totally overpriced, I would suggest just going online and buying a ticket directly from the Vatican site.

Operator response

The line was infact skipped, you can look it up on google to see how skip the line actually works.

Stay away from Viator

Mistakenly booked a week out and tried to cancelled but couldn’t. Be careful booking on Viator since they will cancel on you last minutes without rebooking for you. And not helping when you are mistakenly booked something. Will never use this service again.
