You must be physically fit and able to walk on the sand and through the dunes.
Look around the capital city Stanley. See the main landmarks: Christ Church Cathedral, Whalebone Arch, Liberation Monument, Battle of the Falklands Monument, Government House (official residence of the King's representative), Lady Elizabeth (Liz) shipwreck Learn about its history. Receive local recommendations on attractions, shops, pubs and restaurants.
Built in Sunderland in 1879 the three masted barque Lady Elizabeth (Liz) is now an impressive shipwreck in Stanley harbour. In 1913 she was damaged whilst rounding Cape Horn. On her way to Stanley harbour she struck the Uranie Rock which caused further damage including a hole in her hull. Upon inspection she was condemned and declared as unseaworthy. She was used as a warehouse before breaking her moorings in a storm in 1936 and drifting to her current day location. Hundreds of thousands of stunning photos of her have been taken over the years. Her backdrop is Stanley harbour, Stanley and a number of mountains. When the tide is very low it's possible to walk out on the sand and touch her.

The tour was great, everything went like clockwork and our group of 6 thoroughly enjoyed the day. Tour guide Chantelle couldn't have been more helpful and was more than happy to vary the planned itinerary to meet our variety of requests - one of our group was interested in history - so we had a large number of questions that were either answered immediately or answers found out. Transport was comfortable and food and drinks in plentiful supply.
Our guide, Mike, provided an enjoyable day of Penguin watching & a tasty home-made lunch (by Roxy) at Bertha's Cove & Yorke Bay, plus highlights of Stanley. We appreciated our private & personal shorex!
First of all, you need to understand that getting into the Falklands is sometimes difficult due to weather conditions. In our case, our tour was cut short and the cruise ship had to depart much earlier than anticipated. That being said, Roxy did a phenomenal job getting us to Bertha's Beach where we saw hundreds of Gentoo Penguins and their chicks. Of course, this is only important to those people who think baby penguins are the cutest animals on earth. We also were able to see a couple of King Penguins. Unfortunately, on our way to the second half of the tour, we received word that the ship was calling all passengers back on board, so we missed what could have made the trip even more astounding. The tour you take is important because many of the people on our ship told stories of their tours where they saw few penguins and those that they did see were at a distance too far to clearly see. On our tour, Roxy took us to a location where the birds were so close that the Rangers had to be certain that we did not get too close. The Island geography is beautiful and Roxy is a seventh generation islander so she had a wonderful understanding of the people and history. Take my advice and get a private tour, stay away from the big busses, and try to get Roxy as your guide.
Gosh thank you so much for your wonderful review Tim! I really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. You’re absolutely right — visiting the Falklands can sometimes come with a bit of unpredictability, especially when it comes to weather and ship schedules. I was very sorry that your day had to be cut short (I was having the best day with you all!), but I’m really glad we were able to get you out to Bertha’s Beach in time to see the gentoo penguins and their chicks (which I completely agree are some of the cutest animals on earth!). Seeing a couple of king penguins as well was a lovely bonus. It was such a shame that the ship called everyone back earlier than expected just as we were heading towards the second part of the tour. This was the first time this had happened in all my years of running Lupin Tours. I’m very happy we were still able to make the most of the time you had ashore. Thank you as well for your kind words about the guiding. The Falklands mean a great deal to me and I genuinely love sharing the wildlife, landscapes, and history of the islands with visitors. It’s always special for me when guests get to experience the penguins up close in a natural setting like Bertha’s Beach. It was a real pleasure meeting you, and I’m so glad you were able to enjoy your time here — even if it ended a little sooner than we all hoped. Thank you for making my day with your review and kind words! Roxy - Owner, Lupin Tours
Our guide and driver was Michael. It so happened that we arrived earlier than the scheduled time—we were among the first to disembark from the tender. But Roxy immediately adjusted the plans, and we set off to explore the island. Although the morning weather wasn’t very favorable—rain and wind—we still managed to see Gentoo penguins and Emperor penguins. We visited two bays; unfortunately, in the second bay there were only two lonely penguins. But of course, that depends entirely on the penguins—where and when they choose to be. On the other hand, we saw a fur seal in another bay. Many thanks to Michael for the interesting facts about the island and its history. We were able to stop along the way at our request. Michael drove us around, told us about the town, and recommended suvenirs shop. Thank you and we recommend to take this tour. Katerina and George
Wow! Thank you so much for your lovely review, Katerina and George. Cruise days can sometimes be a bit unpredictable, so I’m always happy to adjust plans when possible to help guests make the most of their time on the islands. The Falklands weather certainly likes to keep things interesting, but I’m delighted you were still able to see the gentoo and king penguins, and a sea lion too. As you said, the penguins always decide where they want to be, and we simply go looking for them! That's thee beauty of visiting Bertha's Beach, you're guaranteed hundreds of penguins and an incredible penguin experience! I’ll be sure to pass your kind words on to Mike. He’ll be very pleased to hear that you enjoyed the tour so much. Thank you again for choosing Lupin Tours and for taking the time to recommend the tour. It was a pleasure having you here, and I hope you have wonderful memories of your day in the Falkland Islands. Roxy - Owner, Lupin Tours
Unforgettable experiences- saw 3 different types of penguins (King, Gentoo & Magellanic) plus watched a sea lion try to get to some of the penguins. The weather was great despite the high winds. Enjoyed hearing all about the history of the Falkland Islands as well as seeing the cute town of Stanley. Our guide was amazing & we really enjoyed the packet that Roxy provided which included a stamped postcard that we mailed. Highly recommend this tour.
Wow! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a lovely review. We’re delighted you had such an unforgettable day. I will pass on your kind words to Chantell. Falklands weather always likes to keep things interesting, so we’re glad it played its part despite the winds. It’s great to hear what you enjoyed learning about. I’m also really pleased you appreciated the welcome pack and the stamped postcard — it’s one of my favourite little touches. The packs and some of the additions to do are a new addition for this season - I love hearing how popular they are! Thank you again for your recommendation. It was a pleasure having you with us, and we hope your postcard reached home safely. Hi to Doug! haha ~ Roxy, Lupin Tours
I canceled this tour on January 20 and went or the tour with Roy to Volunteer Point instead. I am being charged for a tour that I canceled. I tryout with explain this at the tender docking and was ignored and treated rudely by the girl at the dock.
We’re sorry you feel dissatisfied, however we need to correct several inaccuracies in your review. Your booking with Lupin Tours was not cancelled with us. We did not receive a cancellation notification within Viator. As per Viator’s booking system and cancellation policy, the booking therefore remained active and chargeable. Any changes you chose to make with an alternative operator are entirely separate from your booking with us. Unfortunately, we are unable to cancel or refund a tour unless the cancellation is processed correctly through Viator within the stated timeframe. When you arrived at the dock, I explained this clearly and calmly. Your driver was present and ready to take you on the booked tour. At the same time, I worked with Jimmy Curtis to understand what may have happened with your alternative arrangements. Jimmy also confirmed that, had you taken the tour with us as booked, he would not have issued a refund either, as this would also have been outside his cancellation policy. While you were discussing your options with your friends, who were also booked with Jimmy, I needed to assist another guest who had arrived for their scheduled tour. I did not leave the area and you were not ignored. Once that guest departed, I turned back to continue the conversation, however you had already chosen to leave with your driver, Roy. I followed up with you through Viator messages later that day to clarify the situation and refunded the Bertha’s Beach admission fee. ~ Roxy, Lupin Tours owner
Lupin Tours is a personal, family run, tailored visit to two Penguin locations, historic sites, lots of very interesting information about the Islands and finishes with a tour of Port Stanley. Our Guide and driver, Roxy, is a seventh generation member of a longstanding Falklands family, and also mother to the next generation in this beutiful Country. Roxy introduced us to the Falklands with such real pride and passion, answering all our questions about life and living in the Falklands. The drive to each location presented beutiful views, scenery, wildlife and a peek in to life of the people who live on these incredible islands, a truly wonderful experience. The two penguin locations we visited were similar, and yet very different, both had nesting areas, beach entry and exit points, and were stunning locations, but that’s where the similarity ends. The first location was very public, complete with toilets, admin area and good control to protect the Penguins, but not too crowded. However, the second location was very private, Roxy, my wife and I were the only people there, an amazing experience, priceless! Watching Penguins going about their business is fascinating, amusing and something we could have watched all day, we gave them a wide birth to help protect them, an outstanding privilege. I would recommend Lupin Tours without any hesitation whatsoever soever! Thank you Roxy and Lupin Tours for such a wonderful day.
Gosh thank you Eric! What an incredible review! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a glowing review. We really do appreciate it. I loved getting to spend the day with you both and to show you the Falklands. Thank you! Roxy
We toured the island with Roxy the owner of the company. She was lovely, laid back and an excellent driver. She took us an hour and a half out of Stanley in her 4x4 we went right onto the beach. We were very close to the penguins. It was fabulous. She had a home made lunch for us too! We went to 2 different beaches to see penguins and finished up with a driving tour of the town.
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a glowing review. We really appreciate it. I really appreciate the lovely comments! I loved getting to spend the day with you and to show you the Falklands. Thank you! Roxy
This tour provided a chance to see some of the island, learn about life there, and, of course, see penguins! Roxy had been very helpful in planning this tour and patiently answered all my questions. Our 8-year old grandson was with us, so she had a Falklands activity book and colored pencils to provide entertainment for him on the drive to Bertha's Beach. We had as much time at Bertha's Beach and Gypsy Cove as we wanted. Shawn (hope I spelled her name correctly) was an accomplished driver and gave us much information about the island and life there. It was a very pleasant and enjoyable experience! We would certainly recommend this tour.
Thank you for taking the time to leave such a glowing review Ginger. We really appreciate it. I'll pass this on to Sian too, I know she'll be pleased. It was lovely to meet you after all our correspondence. I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the tour so much. Thrilled that you would recommend Lupin Tours to others! Best wishes, Roxy
Very windy, wear appropriate clothing. Very interesting, lots of Penguins. Fairly long walk to see Penguins.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us 5 stars, it's very much appreciated. We're glad you enjoyed the tour. Falkland Islands weather can be a bit all over the place and very changeable. Always good to be prepared. Today we've had wind, clouds, bit of rain and sunshine! The walk to the penguins at Yorke Bay is about 5 minutes through sand dunes hence why we advise that guests have a moderate level of fitness. The penguins on the beach at Bertha's Beach are also about 5 minutes from the car park. Sometimes they're much closer, it just depends on the day. Thank you for booking with us. Best wishes, Roxy
