The Pena Palace is one of the most emblematic monuments in Portugal and one of the most visited in the country. It is located in the Serra de Sintra, around 40 kilometers from Lisbon, and is a stunning example of 19th century romantic architecture. The palace was built by King Fernando II, who was a great admirer of German romantic architecture. The project was inspired by medieval castles and baroque churches, with a mix of styles that results in a unique and inimitable building.
Sintra, a charming village with a rich history, is known for its ancient, winding streets. A walk through the village streets is a great way to experience its unique atmosphere. The streets are narrow and paved with cobblestones, (Wear comfortable shoes) and the houses are built in stone and tiles. You'll find a mix of ancient and modern architecture, from traditional Portuguese houses to mountain chalets. As you walk, you will be able to see many important landmarks such as the Sintra National Palace, the Castle of the Moors and Quinta da Regaleira. You will also find many souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes, and you will even have time to taste one of the most delicious sweets in Portugal
This is an optional visit if you wish to change to the Pena Palace visit: Stop at Cabo da Roca: Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point in continental Europe, located at the end of the Serra de Sintra, a place of great natural beauty, with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. Cascais: Cascais is a coastal city known for its beautiful beaches such as Praia da Rainha, Praia da Conceição and Praia da Duquesa, its historical and cultural heritage where you can find historic buildings such as the City Palace, the Church of Misericórdia and the Condes de Castro Guimarães Museum, and its lively nightlife. This itinerary can be adapted to your preferences and the time you have available.

We booked a private half day tour to Sintra. Carlos picked us up at the agreed place and time. The car was a luxurious Mercedes as advertised, clean, specious and very comfortable. Carlos knew how to get us at ease and was very knowledgeable about everything, specially about history and culture. He walked around with us in Sintra village gave us some tips. We also drove around the mountain. He pointed out a lot of sights, giving us all kinds of extra interesting information. He brought us to the entrance of the castle and waited for us to return. Afterwards we drove around the neighboring villages and went to see the Cabo da Roca. Carlos was a true gentleman, his English was impeccable. We had a fantastic day! When we return to Lisbon, we will definitely book him again. 100% recommended.

We were on a timeline but wanted an opportunity to visit Sintra and its storied castles. Rui was punctual and knowledgeable. The vehicle was beautiful and well appointed. Our timing into Sintra was perfect, and we had time to stroll in the old town before meeting Rui for a ride to the Moorish Castle. This would be great for a full day tour - but we just did not have the time. What it is - a car and driver to get you where you want to go for a half day with knowledge of the area. Rui isn't going to guide you through the sites, but he is there to get you where you need to be. Do coordinate prior to your day to discuss ordering entry tickets to the palaces as they require advance purchase. Would absolutely recommend for those who need to maximize their time and prefer to travel comfortably.
