Osaka's Sumiyoshi Taisha (住吉大社, "Sumiyoshi Grand Shrine") is one of Japan's oldest shrines. Founded in the 3rd century before the introduction of Buddhism, it displays a unique style of shrine architecture, called Sumiyoshi-zukuri, that is free of influence from the Asian mainland. Only two other shrine architecture styles are also considered purely Japanese: Shinmei-zukuri as seen at the Ise Shrines and Taisha-zukuri as seen at Izumo Taisha.

Shitennoji (四天王寺, Shitennōji) is one of Japan's oldest temples and the first ever to be built by the state. It was founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku, who supported the introduction of Buddhism into Japan. Although the temple's buildings burned down several times throughout the centuries, they were always carefully reconstructed to reflect the original 6th century design. The outer temple grounds are free to enter, but admission to the inner precinct, the Gokuraku-jodo Garden and the treasure house is paid. In the pebble covered courtyard of the inner precinct stand a five-storied pagoda that can be entered and ascended and the Main Hall (Kondo) in which Prince Shotoku is enshrined as a statue of Kannon.

The observatory offers great views of the city through its windows and from its open-air deck. In the basement, there is a restaurant floor that replicates a town of the early Showa Period, while offices occupy most other floors.

Great experience

We had an incredible 4-hour tour of Osaka with Rie! She reached out two days in advance to tailor the itinerary exactly to our interests. She provided fascinating history at Osaka Castle. On top of that, she took some amazing photos for us. Highly recommend her for a personalized and memorable experience!

Operator response

Reading your comment, I was so happy to know that you enjoyed the Osaka tour. I also had a wonderful time from start to finish, being able to talk so much about the history of Osaka Castle. Thank you so much. I hope you'll visit Japan again during cherry blossom season! Rie

Osaka 5 star, Guide 2 star

The tour guide did a good job on the locations she selected to tour. She also had appropriate commentary, but lacked offering historical facts /dates/ historical figures/ etc. that should be part of the narrative at all locations. Osaka is SO old, and the history is centuries old - it would have been nice to hear more of the history of Osaka and the influence it had on Japan in general. What REALLY disappointed me was the fact that she did not ONCE contact me directly until the day before we were meeting. It was VERY stressful to travel from the US, book this tour 6 months in advance, and not hear from the actual tour guide until less than 24 hours prior to the tour. I flew into Osaka and had no idea if I was going to have a tour or not. She needed to be more fluent in English, speaking and comprehension. Even after we indicated that we did not want to walk too much. We would have preferred 3-4 miles - instead of the 6-7 our watch indicated. We also told her that instead of subways or busses, we would pay for taxis or Ubers - she still put us on a bus that was painfully slow - and she offered no narrative of the "sights" while we rode by. My suggestion is to NEVER put your tourists on a public bus unless they request public transport only, or it is the last resort. She was a really nice person, so I am troubled to give her such a poor review, but hopefully she will respond to this criticism and improve her tour skills.

Operator response

Thank you very much for your review! As we are able to access you messages, we can see that you were first contacted on April 24th. You did reply to this message so we understand that you were able to receive messages. After your guide's second message on April 27th, there was no reply from your side. Requests for less walking, more taxis and more can easily be sorted out with open communication from customers to guides. If you have trouble with messages, please contact viator so they can assist you. We hope that your review will help other customers to understand our tours & how to be communicative for a great tour. A Great Tour of Kyoto

The tour was both very informative and incredibly picturesque, while also serving as some good exercise. The guide was pleasant throughout and easy to understand so the experience was a lot of fun overall. We would recommend the tour to anyone looking to see the sights of Kyoto through the lens of someone with a deep understanding of Japanese culture.

Osaka - 4 hour trip

We had only half a day in Osaka so opted for the 4 hour tour with a Government Guide. We were allocated Yuki and she got in touch by email shortly after I had booked the tour to discuss the itinerary. We agreed on what we wanted to see and left the rest to Yuki. She met us at the cruise terminal and took us into Osaka to visit Osaka Castle. Afterwards we visited the shopping area and then we were on a quest to find Japanese Pokemon cards for our grandson. Yuki was informative and interesting, her English was good and we enjoyed our trip in the time that we had. Thank you Yuki

Operator response

I appreciate your kind and considerate review, which made me very happy. I am glad to know you have enjoyed the tour. It's a shame the Pokémon cards were sold out, but I hope your family enjoyed the other character goods you bought as souvenirs. It was a short but enjoyable time with you. I wish all the best to you and your family. - Yuki

Creat custom tour of Osaka

Our tour was amazing. The guide, Ms. Sachiko Ogura, was great. She communicated well prior to the tour and helped create an itinerary for a very picky tourist (me). She knew exactly where to go and how to navigate busy metro stations and streets. She was friendly and patient with us. She even took pictures of us with her iPad and sent them to my son's phone. This was above and beyond my expectations. Thank you so much Sachiko!

Operator response

Thank you very much for wonderful review which made me happy and encouraged. It’s my honor to join your commemorative tour in Japan. Were you able to play the games in Shinsekai later? My only regret is you missed those games. If not, let me guide again for your family! - Sachiko

Amazing time! Would highly recommend!

Yuka-san was amazing, warm, and professional! My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time learning about her hometown. She taught us a lot about the history of Osaka castle and knew great photo spots! We also went to Sumiyoshi Taisha thanks to her recommendation, which was wonderful because of the scenery and the various shrines there. My favorite moment was how she showed us how to read our fortunes and follow proper temple etiquette which was important to us. We learned so much about Japanese culture and even walked away with some new phrases! It was important to us to have a guide who we could befriend and talk to, and Yuka-san was kanpeki (perfect!) Ookini, Yuka-san!

Operator response

Hi! Ookini for your lovely comments! I'm really happy to know that you enjoyed the tour with me. I was deeply moved by your sencere interest in our culture. Also you told me how wonderful things we had in Japan. Sometimes they are too common to us and we'll never realize the value they have. Did you enjoy Final Fantasy Cafe? I knew you did! I'll never forget your happy smiles and that yammy chocolate! (Ooops! I cannot stop eating them!) Hope see you again! - Yuka

Masa was punctual and we...

Masa was punctual and we met her where she told us. She helped us get all day subway passes so we could make the most of our 4 hour tour. We answered a questionnaire in advance so we could see what we wanted in the time we had. She kept us on schedule. She answered all our questions and gave detailed information for the places we visited. She gave interesting little tidbits besides the history. She recommended places for dinner and shopping. She also gave candy prizes when we answered questions correctly. It was a fun and informative tour.

Operator response

Dear my guest, Thank you so much for your kind review! First of all, congratulations again to your niece on her graduation. I am truly honored that you chose Japan for such a special milestone trip. Thanks to your detailed information and cooperation in the pre-tour questionnaire, we were able to navigate the entire itinerary smoothly. The success of the tour was truly a team effort! I hope you had a wonderful time shopping and enjoyed a delicious dinner at Shinsaibashi afterwards. Please come back to Japan anytime! I look forward to seeing your family again. Warm regards, Masa
