Itinerary
Travel to the historic Destrehan Plantation on Louisiana's Old River Road. During your guided tour of Destrehan Plantation, your historical interpreter will bring to life the stories of generations who lived on and worked on this land. You’ll hear tales of the lives of both owners and slaves. Access to The Jefferson Room – featuring an authentic document signed by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Learn about the little known 1811 German Coast Slave Revolt. See the Rost Home, a Freeman Colony exhibit, both located in the Miller-Haydel Museum on Destrehan's grounds.
We pause in front of Evergreen Plantation, see the most intact plantation complex in the South with 37 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, including 22 slave cabins in their original double-row configuration under a truly spectacular alley of centuries old oak trees. It is a privately owned, working sugar cane plantation. More than 400 individuals were enslaved at Evergreen Plantation over the course of 150 years. Many were exceptionally skilled, working as long sawyers, coopers, carpenters, blacksmiths, engineers, seamstresses, and domestics. Some could trace their ancestry back multiple generations to the first slaves brought to the plantation. This diverse community was made up of Africans, the enslaved from the American South, and Creoles of Louisiana.
On your self-guided audio walking tour, at your own pace, you will see slave cabins, a freedmen’s church, detached kitchen and a 1790s owner’s house. Learn about the harsh realities & raw historical facts of slavery in pre-Civil War Louisiana. Witness the dark side of American history. Hear narratives and see 14 memorials honoring people enslaved on the grounds of a historical sugar, rice and indigo plantation established in 1752. Visit Whitney Plantation's Museum of Slavery, learn about the lives of people held in bondage for over 100 years.
St. Joseph Plantation, built in the 1830’s is one of the few fully intact sugar plantations in the River Parishes. In addition to the Manor Home, this historic site features many outbuildings: original slave cabins, a detached kitchen, blacksmith’s shop, schoolhouse, and chicken coop. Felicity is a sister plantation to St. Joseph. Built in 1845 on one thousand acres of premium farmland, it was a dowry gift from “Valcour” Aime to one of his daughters, Félicité. She married Alexandre Fortier and they had fourteen children.
View from the River Road the iconic alley of 28 centuries old Oaks and the 1830 Greek Revival Mansion
A short ride up on the famed River Road through sugar cane fields and over the Sunshine Bridge brings you to Houmas House Plantation. Enjoy a gourmet lunch (included) in the grand dining hall at Houmas House Plantation. The Buffet Lunch Menu: * Chicken and Andouille Gumbo * Caesar Salad (GF) * Cornmeal Fried Catfish * Chili Glazed Roasted Chicken (GF) * Crawfish Étouffée * Red Beans, Sausage and Rice (GF) * Shrimp and Mushroom Pasta * Roasted Vegetables (GF) * White Chocolate Bread Pudding * Non-alcoholic Drinks & Coffee (included) After lunch, visit this Sugar Palace. Upon completion in 1840, Houmas House was the crown jewel of Louisiana's River Road. This is a great tour! Our tour guide, Giselle with Tours by Isabelle, was oustanding. Lots of history and local information during the drive and at the plantations. Visited three plantations, each one was different so we got a wide range of experiences on one tour. The time at each plantations was good; not too long and not too short. The included lunch at Houmas House was very good. Very enjoyable day, I would recommend this tour.
Thank you so much for this detailed and happy review, Lon. SO happy you enjoyed our all day Plantation tour. I am sharing it with Gisele. Cordially, Isabelle C.
We had a great time, learned new things. Lunch was delicious.
Informative tour with our guide Gisele. Origins of Louisiana, and state history was shared in clean, air conditioned van while being transported to multiple sites. Plantation specific information, construction, crops, tools, families were all shared by knowledgeable guides. And the food served for lunch, delicious!
Our lunch was a lovely meal with salad, pasta, gumbo, rice and beans, fried fresh catfish and fresh vegetables—- with warm bread pudding with bourbon sauce. Yummy.
I am so glad you enjoyed our nice Buffet Cajun lunch at Houmas House Plantation ! Thank you Isabelle C.
Fantastic experience! What a beautiful property and grounds! Lunch was amazing! Learned a lot about New Orleans.
Well, we are so glad you loved it and I will forward your review to the owner at Houmas House Plantation! Please come back on your next birthday Isabelle C.
This was absolutely fantastic.. We did the tour with lunch provided. Delicious. Our tour guides on both plantations were fantastic. They were knowledgeable and open to any questions. Highly recommend this tour!!
That’s really a nice review. Thank you so much Miss Julianne! It was a pleasure to give you your grand tour, and I hope y’all come back soon to NOLA. Isabelle C.
The great care by Isabelle started right after booking. The tour we did with Robert, who provided us with a lot of interesting information
I actually took two tours with Isabelle, the second was the Laura & Whitney tour. I was picked up on time at my hotel. The van was immaculately clean, Isabelle will entertain you on your trip out to the plantations with lots of information about things other than the plantations. Even though the tour only goes to two plantations she will point out other plantation as you pass them and supply information on them. The only average thing about my tour was the lunch at Homas.
Thank you so much for your 5- star review, and for having taken 2 tours with us. I clean the vans myself, these days and I am so glad you noticed that! I am sorry and surprised the lunch at Houmas House wasn't as great as you expected, that is quite unusual as most people really enjoy it. Maybe the chef was not at his best that day...I will talk to the Manager there about it. Thank you again. Cordially, Isabelle C.
This was a great experience! Isabelle is so knowledgeable and was excited to share a variety of information that we found fascinating! She even drove a different way to our second location when she heard how interested we were in seeing other plantations along the way. She looked out for us at both locations, providing umbrellas for the rainy day and making sure we saw demonstrations and the extensive grounds. She did an excellent job and we can't wait to visit NOLA again and go on more tours with her and her wonderful company!
So happy you enjoyed our All-Day Plantation tour, even in the rain! You all were such a good audience and it was a pleasure to give you your tour. We always try to time our visits at Destrehan Plantation for our guests to experience their demonstrations. Please come back to visit us very soon! Cordially, Isabelle C.
Rene was our tour guide and he was GREAT! So nice and friendly, very knowledgeable and glad to answer any questions that anyone asked. The gourmet lunch buffet was amazing! So delicious and lots of dishes to try and enjoy! The length of the trip was just right and the cost was very reasonable! The plantations were beautiful and we learned so much.
Thank you Ms Susan, I have shared this happy review with the owner and the managers at Houmas House Plantation, and with your driver-guide: Rene; we are so glad you enjoyed our Plantation tour with lunch! Cordially, Isabelle C.
