The Batu Caves in Malaysia are one of the most important Hindu religious sites outside of India and are a must-see once you tire of shopping and wandering Kuala Lumpur. Just eight short miles north of the city, the Batu Caves are just one of the many interesting things to do around Kuala Lumpur. The caves attract around 5,000 visitors a day who come to climb the grueling 272 steps up to the caverns. The Batu Caves are a focal point for Hindu Malaysians, particularly during Thaipusam: they house a 113-year-old temple, along with an interesting array of Hindu artwork and shrines. Every year during the Hindu festival of Thaipusam, the Batu Caves attract more than a million devotees and spectators. The eight-hour procession of music and ceremony leaves offerings before a giant statue of Lord Murugan, the Hindu God of War. What to Expect at the Batu Caves Approaching the caves, the first thing you notice is a towering golden statue of Lord Murugan. Erected in 2006, this statue is the largest in the world dedicated to the deity and stands guard to the 272 leg-burning steps that lead up to the cave entrances. As you make your way up the steps, you will undoubtedly be entertained by a tribe of monkeys that feed off the steady stream of tourists. You may take pictures, but pay attention to your belongings! Resting points along the stairs provide nice views of the suburbs of Kuala Lumpur. Some Things to Know Before Visiting the Batu Caves Admission to Batu Caves is free. The caves are open all year from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The area is not very handicap-accessible, so senior travelers may have difficulty getting up the stairs to the entrances. The wild caves are very muddy; bring a change of clothes if you plan to take any of the spelunking tours. There are stalls and restaurants offering Indian food outside the entrance of the Batu Caves. However, you should make your way back to Kuala Lumpur for better quality food at lower prices.

Don't do this tour.

Was meet at the port by a guy wearing Tripadvisor shirt. He had just sold a tour to an American Lady and when we approached him about our tour and traveling with him he said NO and called up a cab spoke to the driver. we were push into this cab, I immediately complained that this drivers English was limited. The driver assured us that the other guy told him where to go. The cab was dirty, the driver stunk of tabaco and we thought we might have to get out and push the cab as it spluttered along. In hindsight we would choose a different tour.

Efficient and comfortable city overview, but a bit rushed

The service is exactly what it is: a driver who takes you to the listed spots. You’re given a set amount of time at each stop to take photos, then you’re picked up and driven to the next location. If you’re looking for a more immersive experience of the city, this is probably not the best option, since you spend most of the day in the car and at most about an hour at one of the main attractions. However, if your goal is to see the city quickly and comfortably, it works well—especially because it’s a large city and you cover a lot of ground by car. Cons: The driver is very knowledgeable about the city, but they’re not a tour guide, so you don’t get much context or detailed explanations. The listing mentions 6–8 hours, but the driver was quite strict about ending the tour just before the 6-hour mark. That made the experience feel rushed, with limited time at each stop and no flexibility to adjust the itinerary. It would be great to include time at the aviary. We were told it’s amazing, but it requires at least 1–2 hours. Currently, you only pass by it because the lunch restaurant is located there. Pros: The car is in good condition, with AC (which is essential in the heat), and bottled water is provided. It’s a private service with personalized attention. Communication with the driver is good, and overall the service is attentive. The restaurant they take you to for lunch is very good, with both local and more Western options available.

KL Private Tour

Our driver, Azman, was wonderful. He patiently waited for us to disembark our ship as the ship was delayed getting clearance from local authorities. He was flexible, took us to the locations we preferred to visit but also had great ideas for places to stop along the way. Also, his car was very nice with air conditioning and seat coolers. We would highly recommend Azmar!
