Itinerary
Kotor is situated in the most secluded part of Boka Kotorska (The Bay of Kotor). While it dates from the Illyrian period, Kotor developed into an important commercial and artistic center in the Middle Ages. Many empires battled for control over the city throughout the centuries: from being an autonomous city of the Byzantine Empire, free city of medieval Serbia, then under Venetian or Hungarian states, gaining independence and then returned to Venetian control once again, just to be occupied by France and then Austria, until Kotor finally became part of Yugoslavia. Kotor tour begins at the main gate of the Old Town, also known as the Sea Gate (Morska vrata), where you will meet our guide.

This was a short small group walking tour. Our guide, Marja, was engaging, clearly knew her history and enjoyed her work. She was easy to find right outside the Main Gate. The tour is only one hour, as shown in the listing, so it isn't in great depth, but does give you a good feel for this very old city in this new country (Montenegro gained independence in 2006.) At the conclusion, she provided a variety of suggestions of other ways to explore and enjoy the old town area. We would have happily spent more time with Marja.

The old town of Kotor is a wonderful destination. It deserves a visit. Beautiful historic city, well-preserved, and friendly people. It is a medieval walled city on the Bay of Kotor with mountains in the background. It is pedestrian-only with narrow cobblestone streets and alleys. The city walls are enchanting and add to the atmosphere.
