Depart central Cairo by air-conditioned vehicle and journey south to Saqarra, home to the oldest step pyramid still standing. Hear how this desert area was used as a burial ground for Memphis, Lower Egypt’s ancient capital. Marvel at the vast Step Pyramid of Zoser as your guide recounts how it was constructed in the 27th century BC. Learn about the main features of the flat-topped pyramid and hear how it ranks as the world’s oldest large-scale stone monument. Admire the smaller pyramids around it,
then continue to the site of Memphis. Founded in around 2,900 BC, this ancient city is believed to have been purpose-built and was characterized by majestic temples and palaces. Visit the open-air museum that houses broken statues, carvings, and columns. Marvel at a huge, fallen statue of Ramses II and enjoy the crowd-free atmosphere. Afterward, return to Cairo where your tour ends.
