The Citadel was built on a promontory beneath the Muqattam Hills, a setting that made it difficult to attack. There have been three major construction periods leading to the Citadel's current form: 12th-century Ayyubid (starting with Saladin), 14th-century Mamluk (under al-Nasir Muhammad), and in the 19th century under Muhammad Ali
he mosque was built on the site of old Mamluk buildings in Cairo's Citadel between 1830 and 1848, although not completed until the reign of Said Pasha in 1857. The architect was Yusuf Bushnak from Istanbul and its model was the Sultan Ahmed Mosque[1][2] in that city. The ground on which the mosque was erected was built with debris from the earlier buildings of the Citadel. Before completion of the mosque, the alabastered panels from the upper walls were taken away and used for the palaces of Abbas I. The stripped walls were clad with wood painted to look like marble. In 1899, the mosque showed signs of cracking and some inadequate repairs were undertaken. The condition of the mosque became so dangerous that a complete scheme of restoration was ordered by King Fuad in 1931 and was finally completed under King Farouk in 1939. Muhammad Ali Pasha was buried in a tomb carved from Carrara marble, in the courtyard of the mosque. His body was transferred here from Hosh al-Basha in 1857.
The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is a monumental mosque and madrassa Cairo, Egypt was built between 1356 and 1363 during the Bahri Mamluk period, commissioned by Sultan an-Nasir Hasan. The mosque was considered remarkable for its massive size and innovative architectural components, and is still considered one of the most impressive historic monuments in Cairo today. This mosque is stunning and impressive from outside and inside. The mosque occupies almost 8000 square meters and the building is about 500 meters long, 68 meters wide, and 36 meters high. The massive main doorway at the north corner is almost 26 meters high and the minaret at the south corner is the tallest in Cairo at 81.5 meters. The mosque is an active place of worship. At the time of visiting the mosque women need to cover their heads; arms and legs and all visitors will need to leave their shoes prior to entering the mosque.
A beautiful construction that was built to link 19th century Egypt with its glorious past by resembling the neighboring Sultan Hasan Mosque. This is a beautiful Mosque and school housing the tomb of Imam Rifai along with latter members of the Mohammed Ali dynasty - Sultan Hussein Kamel, King Fuad and King Farouk - as well as the last Shah of Iran. Essential for anyone intrigued with 19th & 20th century politics.

Our tour of Islamic Cairo consisted of visiting 4 historic mosques and a museum set up in two old Muslim homes. We skipped the bazaar as we had explored it on another tour. Our tour guide Hoda was wonderful providing a lot of information on the sites as well as a clearer understanding of Islamic values. She also facilitated a more convenient drop off point, which saved us time for our next itinerary. I highly recommend the tour especially if you are fortunate enough to have Hoda as your guide.
We had a wonderful afternoon exploring Cairo with Mina. He was an absolutely fantastic guide, informative and fun to be around. We learned so much history and gained a greater appreciation for the city. Also the tour company arranged the tour at the last minute when another tour company bailed on us. I can’t recommend this company highly enough
My guide Dina is amazing 👍 I could understand most of it because I spoke in easy-to-understand and slow easy words even for those of us who are English guides but not very good at English.
I highly, highly recommend this tour - especially with Hoda and Mario, as your tour guides. The historical sites speak for themselves but to have the individual attention, additional recommendations and for Hoda and Mario make my dreams come to fruition - made this trip that more memorable and excellent.

Our tour guide, Hoda, was incredibly knowledgeable, outgoing and friendly. Her language skills were extremely good and she explained highlights of the tours in very interesting way.. She was very attentive to our needs and requests, adjusting to fit our plan the best way possible. Our driver was Mario who drove safely and delivered us wherever we needed to go quickly. On first day we adjusted order of places we were going to visit based on traffic and this way we could spend more time experiencing Cairo. Thanks!
This was our second outing with Dina and this company. Our trip to the NMEC was very thorough and we appreciated Diana's patience in answering all our questions and really giving us the time to examine all the exhibits. She gave us an overview of the hall of mummies since no guiding is allowed there and waited as we leisurely worked our way through. We wrapped up this part of the tour with a photo op at the beautiful lake. Next up was the Coptic area with the Hanging Church and the Cavern church. Dina is very knowledgeable and set the context well. This was a very relaxing area to walk through and seemingly out of the crowds. We appreciated the flexibility and professionalism of our guide and will use this company again!
First of all, My husband and I love the hotel, We stayed at the Steigenburger Pyramids in Cairo. Isaac was our tour Coordinator and he was very efficient and got back to me as quickly as he could when it came to asking questions about certain things and then we met Dina she is a fantastic tour guide she is knowledgeable, she is sweet, pleasant and patient She was always checking to make sure that we were happy with everything. She and Mario (our driver) were great and on time and we love them both!❤
