Itinerary
Welcome to Theaterplatz—one of Dresden’s most impressive and architecturally striking squares. Surrounded by some of the city’s most important landmarks, this plaza offers a breathtaking view into Dresden’s cultural and historical heart. Dominating the scene is the elegant Semper Opera House, a masterpiece of 19th-century architecture and a symbol of the city’s deep musical heritage. Nearby, you’ll see the magnificent Zwinger Palace with its ornate baroque flair, and the former royal residence, the Residenzschloss, rich with Saxon history as well as the Dresden Cathedral rising with quiet grandeur. Ask your guide to point out the Old Masters Gallery from here.
Designed as a single sculptural entity, the Zwinger was to serve as the opulent entrance to a grand new royal palace that was never built. It is a reminder of the exotic and fantastic festivities once held here 300 years ago. Learn about the man who commissioned it- larger than life, ambitious and a lover of beauty in every form. His legacy endures in the Zwinger and he is to be found in every detail small and big. If time permits and if open, your guide may be able to show you an open-air grotto, well hidden from general view.
Built, burnt down, rebuilt. Repaired and extended, burnt, rebuilt. The Royal Palace is an eclectic guardian of the history of the family that ruled Saxony and is home to their astounding collection of treasures. We walk through one of its courtyards, adorned by the painstaking Renaissance art technique known as Sgraffito. We do not go into the museum itself, but you can go in by yourself later. Ask your guide for more information about the collections to help you decide what to visit and what ticket to buy.
Tucked behind the Residenzschloss, the Stallhof offers a quieter, more intimate glimpse into Dresden’s courtly past. Once used for jousting tournaments and royal festivities, this enclosed Renaissance courtyard still carries echoes of chivalry and pageantry. The arcaded galleries and sandstone columns create a striking space where history feels both grand and personal. It's a hidden gem that invites you to pause and imagine the scenes that once unfolded here.
100 metres long, 24,000 thousand tiles, the longest outdoor porcelain artwork in the world. There are secrets and stories hidden within it. See if you can spot them!
The Royal Cathedral of Dresden is a magnificent structure. Built in secret by a Catholic ruler in Protestant Saxony, the former court church has some unusual features and is one of the burial sites of the Royal family. We will see it from the outside and learn its interesting story.
Known as “The Balcony of Europe,” Brühl’s Terrace offers sweeping views of the Elbe River and the city beyond. Once reserved for nobility, this elegant promenade is now a favorite for visitors and locals alike. Most of the guides in our See my Dresden team will take you up to the top of the stairs to will point out key landmarks—the river Elbe, Dresden's White Fleet of historic steam boats, the buildings along the river, the steeples of churches, and the distant wine slopes. It’s a place to feel Dresden’s spirit in every direction and to get an idea of what possibilities for exploration lie beyond the historic city centre.
Once reduced to rubble, Neumarkt has been beautifully restored to its 18th-century charm. This lively square, anchored by the Frauenkirche, is framed by colorful baroque façades that reflect Dresden’s pre-war charm. Today, Neumarkt is both a place to pause and a window into the past—a vibrant setting where you can find German, Saxon and international options to eat. At Neumarkt is the Frauenkirche, the symbol of Dresden. The church is the personification of Dresden's rising from the ashes. You will learn to understand and appreciate the moving story behind its reconstruction. Our tour usually ends here, so you can explore the church or the places to eat on your own after the tour.
Rising gracefully above the skyline, the Frauenkirche, Church of Our Lady, is the unmistakable heart of Dresden. Its elegant dome—rebuilt from the ruins after World War II—stands as both a triumph of architecture and a powerful symbol of reconciliation. Your guide will share the dramatic story of its destruction, decades-long reconstruction, and the global effort that brought this baroque masterpiece back to life. Whether bathed in sunlight or shadow, the church’s presence is both moving and majestic. Go in later on your own to take a quiet seat and take in the pastel beauty of this peaceful setting. Go down to the crypt to see a small exhibition detailing the rebuilding.

Very complicated process! Not worth it!
We don't have a self tour. This must be for some other company
What a wonderful, relaxing, yet informative tour of historic Dresden. While I knew a bit about the destruction and bombings Dresden suffered during WWII this excellent tour, and our great guide, Robert (or Robby) provided some excellent information and historic background-context for our sights. It was a lovely 2.5 hours of walking at a leisurely pace throughout the major areas near Old Town Dresden. I had been in Dresden already for two days, but the places our guide showed us were not originally on my radar, so to speak, and so I was most surprised and pleased. Our guide knew so much and he showed us several photographs to show us what our stops looked like before and after WWII to compare with what they look like now. I was most impressed with the information I received about the architecture of the palace and other buildings. Our guide was very effective at keeping us all together, moving, and answering a lot of questions. Super fun, enjoyable walking tour--and I LOVE walking! For those who may be worried about the difficulty of the walk, do not fear. All was essentially flat and gentle walking with lots of stops for rest and sight seeing. Well worth taking when you are in Dresden.
What a wonderful testimonial to Robert and to the spirit of our tours. Thank you for taking the time to leave such a detailed and helpful review!
One of the most knowledgeable and interesting tour guides I’ve ever had! Karen guided us through Dresden’s history and landmarks from the beginning up through the present day. She is a gifted tour guide and you will leave with a much deeper understanding of Dresden.
Thank you for the review and for joining the tour on a really hot day! I am glad to hear it was worth it.
Robert our guide was from Dresden and offered an authentic voice on the history of the city (the good and not to good history) which was really terrific. Well paced. A good way to build some knowledge of the city and get your bearings if a first-time visitor.
Thank you for your kind words!
My family had a wonderful tour with Christina. Her explanations of Dresden history were both informative and entertaining. The group we were with was very small, just 5 people, which meant we had lots of time for questions and for her to explain the things we were interested in. I definitely recommend this tour. It is a fun way to learn the history and architecture of this fascinating city.
Thank you for choosing to do the walking tour with us. Thank you also for your review and mentioning all the positives!
Great tour by a knowledgeable and enthusiastic US expat, Karen Reiman. Highly recommended over just walking around in a large group free tour or on your own.
Absolutely- Walk with us rather than on your own, or being lost in a Free Tour crowd! Thank you for mentioning it and for supporting a local business by choosing us. Thank you for your review!
Beautiful city. Laura was an excellent tour guide with a lot of knowledge of the city and its history
Thank you for your review and kind words!
Our guide Laura was full of energy, enthusiastic, and information. We learned so much about the beautiful old town of Dresden. I wish I had more time to explore all the suggestions by Laura of getting to know this part of the world.
Thank you for finding our beloved city enchanting and for your lovely review. Truly, people need to spend at least three days here to explore the city and its sights. Five days if they want to include day trips to other cities like Meissen or even Saxon Switzerland!
The tour started on time and the guide was very nice and interactive with all the guests. Unfortunately at the first stop it became apparent that we were unable to hear her. It was a very busy day and tons of ambient noise. We excused ourselves after a half an hour. I wish we would have been provided whisper mic. Our choice to leave. Next time we will just do a private tour to avoid this situation.
I am so sorry to hear that the ambient noise made it difficult to hear the guide. She is a teacher and has never had difficulties being heard, but she confirmed it was unusually loud in town that day. We do try and limit our group size to 15- 16 people for that reason. But of course asking for a private tour is always a good option too. Thank you for saying that the guide was nice and interactive.
Our tour was exciting, and we discovered a lot of new things. Leo focused on some exciting details and addressed all questions. He couldn't answer a few questions, but we see that as a learning curve for him.
