Black History & Tremè Neighborhood Walking Tour

Description
As culture-bearers for the city of New Orleans, all of our guides are actively involved in participating and/or performing in various productions and venues that showcase our artistic preservation of Louisiana BBIPOC heritage. We have a unique perspective that goes deeper than what can be found in books (though we’re thorough researchers as well), and we look forward to sharing the rich and blended cultures that make up New Orleans.
Tour Options
Itinerary
Learn the back stories of musical legends such as Moses Hogan, Mahalia Jackson, Louis Armstrong, Buddy Bolden and more.
Visit the actual site where Jazz was born through West African drum circles held every Sunday since 1724. Stand in one of the few places in the US where enslaved people were allowed to mass congregate; where they got married, held church, and traded wares.
Pay your respects at the Tomb of the Unknown Slave on the ground of St. Augustine’s Church in Treme, the oldest Black neighborhood in the nation.
Take in the history that is the foundation of New Orleans music, cuisine, architecture and culture; it can be surprisingly hard to find, and we’re glad you’ve made it to us!

It can be really hot so bring cooling tools - ice water, umbrella, fan, cooling wrap, etc. It was very educational!
This was my first time taking a historical tour in New Orleans, and one thing I wanted was a guide who was from the community that she was representing, and a locally owned a small business, someone who respects the people and the culture and is willing to tell the truth, even if it makes people uncomfortable. Dartanya was all of those things, not only that, it was evident that she was deeply passionate about the storytelling, and connected to the people, places, and events. Highly recommend and plan to tour with her again.
Thank you so much for the warm review! Dartanya is truly a treasure, and we look forward to seeing you again soon!
An absolute highlight of our visit! Dartanya is a fantastic storyteller who brought the history of Tremé to life. We left feeling enriched, inspired, and much more connected to the real heart of New Orleans. She shared so much fascinating history that we never would have discovered on our own. Truly an unforgettable experience! Thank you Anansi's Daughters crew!

Just got back from New Orleans. What an incredible story of Treme, New Orleans and the history of New Orleans back to the 1700's. LaToya was our guide. She is a great story teller. Do yourself a favor and take the tour. We also stopped in at the Backstreet Cultural Museum to see amazing Mardi Gras costumes and got food at Lil Dizzy's. All Good!!!
So glad you enjoyed the tour! We hope you come back soon and take more tours either us.
LaToya is an amazing story teller and keeper of Treme history. Love and exuberance for the neighborhood shows through. What a great way to round out the history of New Orleans. Do yourself a favor, visit an amazing neighborhood that IS New Orleans. Eat at Li’l Dizzy’s Cafe and visit Backstreet Cultural Museum for Mardi Gras history and costumes on display. All amazing, all worth the time.
Thank you so much for the warm review! LaToya is a wordsmith for sure, and one of the most genuine culture-bearers I’ve met here in New Orleans. We hope you come back and take more tours with us in the future!
