Gethsemanekirche is a historic church located in the Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood of Berlin. Built in the late 19th century in the neo-Romanesque style, the church's stunning architectural design features a large domed roof and intricate details on the exterior. During the Cold War, Gethsemanekirche played an important role as a meeting place for the East German opposition, known as the "peaceful revolutionaries", who would gather in the church to discuss their plans for change. Today, the church stands as a symbol of Berlin's rich history and as a testament to the resilience and courage of those who fought for democracy during a turbulent time in the city's past.

Our guide, Alex, was born in the area while the wall was still standing. First, his knowledge of Berlin’s history as well as the area where the food tour was conducted is considerable. We enjoyed the five tastings including dessert and a couple of drinks. The chicken Shawarma sandwich was the best I’ve ever tasted. The flatbread as well - full of flavor, but not spicy. We highly recommend Alex and he walk with me tours.

Alex escorted us on a fun tour that made several delicious stops. He gave great background info that helped us understand the history of the neighborhood and of East Berlin/Germany in general, including the immigration patterns that created the city’s cultural mix and its many wonderful cuisines. While we stuffed our faces, we talked a little politics, shared some stories, and had a fabulous time overall.

Joseph was a kind, thoughtful guide. He provided a mini historical tour between food stops. The food was a good crosscut of the neighborhoods we traversed. He checked in with us several times during the tour to be sure we were enjoying the food and our tour, and to answer any questions we had. I highly recommend Joseph to be your guide at Walk With Us…..and I would advise you to go on an empty stomach!!

We had a wonderful, if very chilly, tour with Alex exploring the Prentzlauer Berg area and eating our weight in delicious food. What I appreciated most is that the places he took us to were ones I would have walked right past without thinking, never expecting the food inside to be so delicious. Alex was able to give us hospitality, historical context, some laughs, and great insight into modern life in Berlin. I'm still daydreaming about that chicken shawarma on our first stop!
Dear Terri, Many thanks for this amazing review for our Berlin street food and cultural tour with Alex in beautiful Prenzlauer Berg. We’re so glad that you could get a good feel of modern Berlin and that you also learned some things about the history and culture of Berlin and the district Prenzlauer Berg. We agree - the chicken shawarma at our favorite Lebanese eatery is also one of our personal favorites on this tour (even though we made sure that all bites are delicious of course ;). Thank you again so much, Terri! Warmest wishes to Alabama, Margot + Alex from Walk With Us Tours
