Berlin Under the Third Reich: Discover WWII Sites and History

Begin your tour at the Reichstag Building, one of Berlin’s most iconic landmarks. Once home to the Reichstag of Nazi Germany until 1933, this historic structure has witnessed pivotal moments in German history. Today, it serves as the seat of the modern German Parliament, symbolizing the country’s democratic renewal.

Continue to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, also known as the Holocaust Memorial. This powerful site commemorates the Jewish victims of World War II. You will walk among 2,711 concrete stelae of varying heights, creating a solemn and reflective atmosphere. Beneath the memorial lies the Place of Information, where the names and stories of victims are preserved.

The tour then proceeds to the site of the Führerbunker, the underground bunker that served as one of Adolf Hitler’s final headquarters during the closing days of the war. It was here that he spent his last days and ultimately took his own life, marking the collapse of the Nazi regime.

You will pass by the Detlev-Rohwedder-Haus, once the headquarters of the German Ministry of Aviation and considered one of the largest office buildings in Europe at the time. Today, it houses the German Federal Ministry of Finance.

Next, visit the Topography of Terror, an open-air and indoor museum located on the former site of key Nazi institutions. The exhibition provides a comprehensive and sobering account of the crimes committed during the Third Reich, with a particular focus on the Schutzstaffel and the police apparatus, as well as the mechanisms of terror and propaganda.

As you continue along Niederkirchnerstraße, formerly home to the Reich Main Security Office, you will see notable buildings including the Martin-Gropius-Bau and the Abgeordnetenhaus of Berlin, alongside contemporary elements such as the iconic Buddy Bear sculptures.

The tour then leads to the remains of Anhalter Bahnhof, once one of Berlin’s most important railway stations. With its grand architecture and historical significance, the site also bears witness to darker moments in history, as tens of thousands of Jews were deported from here to concentration camps during World War II.

Conclude your journey at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. Originally built in the 1890s, the church was heavily damaged during Allied bombing raids. Rather than being fully restored, its ruined spire was preserved as a memorial. Today, it stands as a powerful symbol of the devastation of war and the enduring importance of remembrance.
