Itinerary
Beatrix Potter stayed here in the summer's of 1889 and 1895. She hunted fossils and fungi in the woods which she used to paint watercolour pictures from.
One of Beatrix Potter's favourite valley's. We pass Troutbeck park farm. Bought in 1923 and where she became an expert in breeding Herdwick sheep.
We take a brief stop at Waterhead in Ambleside situated at the head of Lake Windermere.
Beatrix was 16 when her parents rented Wray Castle. The family stayed there in 1882. One of her favourite rooms was the library.
Hawkshead is an ancient township that has flourished since Norse times, with many buildings dating from the 17th century. Whilst here we visit the Beatrix Potter gallery. The 17th century building, which was the office of her husband, has remained unaltered since his day. A significant selection of Beatrix Potter's original drawings and illustrations are on display at the gallery.
Bought in 1905 Beatrix Potter used the money she made from her first few books to purchase this little 17th century stone house. Samuel Whiskers, Jemima Puddleduck and Tom Kitten were all created here.
Miss Potter bought the Monk Coniston estate, which included Tarn Hows, for £15,000, in 1929. She then sold half of the estate to the National trust, and left the other half to the trust in her will.
Coniston water is one of the most imposing and beautiful of the English lakes. The Lake is dominated by the "Old man of Coniston" which rises to 803 metres.
Passing through the village of Coniston we come to Yew tree farm. Owned by the National trust. Beatrix bought the farm back in 1930 and saved it from being turned into a forestry plantation. This stunning and historical grade two listed building is one of the most famous farmhouses in the Lake District.

My husband and I came to the Lake District for the first time on holiday and had the most incredible private tour with David. We had the best time seeing and learning all about the area and history of Beatrix Potter. He was so kind, super knowledgeable, accommodating, and professional! He showed up early to our accommodations, and helped create a very memorable day for us! We would highly recommend David, and are already looking forward to booking him again for our next trip back!
Thank you so much for your wonderful 5 star review. Absolutely delighted to hear that you had the best time seeing and learning about this beautiful part of the UK. We hope to welcome you back to the Lake District one day for another adventure!
David was knowledgeable and friendly, and he put me at ease from the moment I entered his spacious, clean and comfortable car. There were a number of different options available for doing the Beatrix Potter tour, Dave offers a private tour. There was no minimum number requirement for booking. Ok; it may have cost me more - but, I got to see what I was interested in. He stopped if I requested a photo stop. I didn’t have to hang about waiting for my fellow travellers to idle back to the car. At the various locations we visited; he pointed out things of interest; he also had a collection of photos that he could show comparisons from previous times (I found this most interesting and helpful). It added another dimension to the tour. David had an easy manner and I felt really relaxed in his company. I would 100% recommend David. He’s been taking ppl around this area for over 20 years. He puts life into what came before. The scenery is spectacular. Well worth investing your time and ££ on his tour. Thanks David. It was a fantastic day.
Thank you so much for this wonderful review! Taking a private tour gives you a lot of flexibility and we are able to customise the tour to maximise the experience for you. So glad you enjoyed the spectacular scenery and we really appreciate your 100% recommendation.
My adult daughter and I had the most outstanding time on our five-hour Beatrix Potter tour. David is an excellent and personable guide-- the experience felt more like a friend showing you their favorite sights than it did a booked tour. We were delighted with everything--to see in person what we'd only imagined was better than we'd even expected. Because of our personal interests, David added details on other celebrated figures, such as the Wordsworths and Charlotte Mason. Private tours allow for that sort of thing, which make them all the more enjoyable. Our private Beatrix Potter tour with David was the highlight of our visit to the Lakes!
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave feedback by posting this lovely review. We are so happy to hear it was the highlight of your visit to the Lake District. We always endeavour to make our tours personal and we are happy it seems we have done that.
