Wonderful Windermere Lakes Tour

My family did a similar tour with Mountain Goat Tours 10 years ago. We booked the same tour again this time as we enjoyed the previous day trip despite the weather condition. Today's trip was amazing, thanks to the good weather and our highly professional and warm guide, Dave. He took us to scenic spots and shared his knowledge about Windermere's past and present. He kept the time well and we thoroughly enjoyed his entertaining stories. Thanks very much, Dave.

Too good to be true reviews and angry that this second tour was not good either!

This was the second Mountain Goat Tour that I, my wife and friends took, and it was just as bad as the Beatrix Potter Half Day tour we did with Mountain Goat. Again, I looked at the reviews before booking and it looked good but we soon found out is wasn't like the experience we were hoping for. The buses that Mountain Goat use are advertised as luxury Mercedes but it was obvious from this tour that all Mercedes are not born (or bought) equal. I have been on a lot of tours all over the world and luxury minibuses are very nice. The one we ended up on was nothing like that, bottom end, budget. The bus was full and on a very hot day (granted there was a heatwave but never the less) it felt cramped, crowded and sweaty. I don't know if the air con wasn't working or just very poor but the whole time we were on the bus it was roasting. Just to make matters worse, we ended up sitting on the side of the bus where the sun was the most, we roasted, no blinds or rotation or anything! It was like torture but I did feel sorry for the driver because he must have been hot too. We couldn't hear what was being said and my wife's friend started to get motion sickness despite taking her medication to prevent it. I have to say I feel very angry at being let down so badly twice by Mountain Goat Tours and I would not encourage anyone to go with them after my experience and the expectations they built up about the tours I went on.

Operator response

We're very sorry to hear that you didn't have a great time on tour with us Steve. We can only apologise profusely about our vehicles air con error on the very hot day. Our office team did offer passengers a 25% off due to our error, to which you accepted. We do suggest our customers to contact us in advance if you are prone to motion sickness as we can pass on the message to your driver guide on the day, who can best advice on seats and proceed with an attentive duty of care for yourself. In our fleet, we do have an array of Mercedes Sprinters which do have marginal differences but rest assured that the one for your tour is always a suitable and comfy vehicle, which may not have felt it on the day due to the heatwave that was out of our control. We are always happy to provide more information on our vehicles if you'd like to know more or are hesitant for your tour experience. Our customers enjoyment and satisfaction with our tour experience is at the forefront of what we do here at Mountain Goat, so we're sorry that it did not translate in that way for yourself. If you change your mind about contacting us directly for a more personable solution, please do email us: tours@mountain-goat.com or ring us: 01904405341, as we would love to talk in a personable manner before we read reviews. Best wishes, Mountain Goat

Lakes Supremo

Jason the tour driver guide made an effort before we even started off to get to know all the passengers and took care to accommodate each person’s requests/needs throughout the day. He was very knowledgeable about each area and place we travelled through or stopped off at. The scenery was beautiful, the villages we drove through were quaint and the country roads added to the charm of the day. I would recommend this tour to other visitors to this region.

A memorable experience

Guided Tour - May 2026 Jane was our tour guide. She did a wonderful job of giving us insights about the place and the events that happened over the centuries (esp. around mining in that area; the building of reservoirs and taking the water to Manchester). We had been on our feet most of the time when we were in England. On this tour - we spent quite a bit of time in the coach as we meandered through Lake District. The typical pitty-patty rain of England did create a little interesting moments, but nothing that significant. I had an expectation of stopping at more lakes - since the headline was ten lakes spectacular. That's not the case here. We did stop by at a few lakes or some scenic view points to see the lakes from the hills. As a tour it was very good and met my expectations, even though it was different from what I expected. The scenery as we drove around, stopped by was really amazing. It was worth the time we spent. Then there was all this some little nuggets of data - about Wordsworth, his role with the train stopping at Windermere!, the Grasmere Gingerbread family and the recipe, the various mines. And then there was this whole story about Beatrix Potter, her bequeathing all her 14 farms to National Trust on the condition they use it for rearing Herdwick sheep. We did stop at a mine in Honister Pass. They do have a tour of the mines. However, we did not have the time to do that tour of the mine (don't know if it was a good thing or not!) It was fun to see the Castlerigg Stone Circle, as we did not go to Stonehenge. Due to some road work - the traffic from Ambleside to Windermere literally crawled!! Never faced this anywhere else in all our trip. This is obviously beyond the control of the tour operator. Jane was extremely knowledgeable and we had a constant flow of information from her. She does this tour only once a week - and we were glad we made it to that. Thank you Jane! Mountain Goat: I wish you had a two-day tour option as well... It would have been worth it.

Operator response

Thank you for your very kind words and 5 star review of our Ten Lakes spectacular tour! We are very happy to hear about your great time on tour with our driver guide Jane, of who's knowledge, experience on the roads and stories contributed to a great memory for yourself! We're thrilled to hear that you enjoyed adventuring through the Lakes, villages and picturesque views on our itinerary. Our itinerary does include Ten Lakes however due to time constraints, road works out of control and safety, we don't stop for exploring at every lake unfortunately. We do advise which lakes we have exploring time at but we can only apologise if you expected any different. We will be sure to pass on your kind words to Jane and thank you for choosing us to Go Explore the Lake District. Best wishes, Mountain Goat
