Nestled on a hillside near Ephesus, this peaceful stone house is one of the most revered Christian pilgrimage sites. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary spent her final years here with St. John the Apostle, who brought her to Ephesus after the crucifixion of Jesus. Over the centuries, the site has welcomed countless pilgrims — including Pope Paul VI (1967), Pope John Paul II (1979), and Pope Benedict XVI (2006), each of whom visited and blessed the shrine. The story of its discovery is just as remarkable. A German nun, Anne Catherine Emmerich, described the house in vivid detail in a vision, despite never having visited Ephesus. Years later, French priests followed her descriptions and uncovered the remains of this very structure. Today, visitors can explore the beautifully preserved house, light a candle, and leave a wish in this serene and deeply spiritual place.

The Temple of Artemis – One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World Dedicated to Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt and the moon, twin sister of Apollo, this magnificent temple stood as a symbol of faith, beauty, and wealth in ancient Ephesus. Originally built around 650 BC on a site sacred to the Anatolian Mother Goddess Cybele, the temple was funded by King Croesus of Lydia, one of the richest rulers of his time. Ingeniously, it was constructed on marshy ground to help protect it from earthquakes — though over the centuries, natural disasters repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt the structure. Despite its ruins today, the Temple of Artemis remains a place of awe — a reminder of Ephesus’s ancient grandeur and its deep spiritual heritage.

Ali CA tour of ruins/Mother Mary house/tourism excursions

First we went to the ruins. They were cool, but the tour guide Ali CA would often let group members wander off, and he did not clearly explain things to everybody. The hologram experience was pretty cool, after that though, Ali brought us to some carpet making shop, where the employees all looked at us like we were free money, likely because we are Americans. They brought my wife into a separate room and tried to sell her numerous carpets without me being present. Next we went to mother Mary’s house. At this point we had been out of water since the ruins, where Ali promised a few times that we would get water soon, yet we did not get any until the end of the mother Mary tour so we were all extremely dehydrated. After this tour, we told Ali a few times that we were all set and wanted to leave, and he kept acting like we wanted to stay and move to the next thing. We all had to force the issue that we wanted to leave. He did not include on booking.com that lunch was not included for free, nor did he include that it would cost money to go into mother Mary’s house per person. The fees of those together would have been roughly 40 dollars per person and for a large group, that is quite a lot of money to expect people to be able to pay without including it on TripAdvisor/booking.com. Overall the things we saw were really cool but I don’t think we needed a guide too much. At the end when we were at mother Mary’s place and once or twice at the ruins, Ali got distracted talking to people which did not seem very professional as a guide. When we returned to the van after the mother Mary’s house tour, our driver was just asleep in the car which was not a good look at all.

Amazing Experience with Nil!

We had an amazing time exploring Ephesus with Nil. She was very informative throughout our tour. She kept the kids involved and considered the older members of our family as well. She was very kind throughout the trip and we enjoyed learning from her. Tickets for the exhibits were included with our booking so it was very easy to get in and out of places. We did a private tour for our group (highly recommended) that lasted about 5 hours, but could have been longer if we wanted. Nil shifted our route around so that we didn’t have to wait in long long lines at Mary’s House which we appreciated. At the Ephesus ruins, where the crowds were very large, she took the time to navigate us to shade so we could learn the history without sitting in the sun. We also took advantage of lunch at the carpet school and it was INCREDIBLE!!! Do not skip the lunch. It was SO worth it! The carpet school was very neat to see and learn about. We even witnessed a woman’s carpet being sold while we were there. The pure emotion she displayed showed how important it is for their families and culture. So glad we got to experience something so important to them. We enjoyed seeing all the carpets and learning about the materials. They were not pushy or pushing us to buy and we never felt hassled. Overall it was a solid 10/10 and we would most definitely recommend it to others.
