Itinerary

15 min

Your day begins at the legendary battlefield of Thermopylae, where history was made in 480 BC. Stand on the site where King Leonidas and his 300 Spartan warriors faced the vast Persian army in a heroic last stand that became a timeless symbol of courage and sacrifice. Walk the grounds of the ancient pass, and learn from your tour-driver how this narrow strip of land became one of the most famous battlefields in world history.

10 min

Pause at the imposing Leonidas Monument, dedicated to the Spartan king who led his warriors into battle. Your guide will share the story behind the statue and its significance in Greek history, offering insight into how Leonidas became an enduring icon of courage.

15 min

Make a brief stop at the famous Thermopylae Hot Springs, known since ancient times for their healing properties. Enjoy views of the natural thermal waters and the surrounding scenery before continuing your journey to Meteora.

90 min

Visit the impressive Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior, also known as Megalo Meteoro, perched at the highest point of Meteora at 534 meters above sea level. Founded in the 14th century by Saint Athanasios of Meteora, this is the largest active monastery in Meteora and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988. Explore its stunning Byzantine architecture, rich history, and beautiful frescoes. The monastery is uniquely located atop Platys Lithos hill and reached by a ladder, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

60 min

Discover the historic Monastery of Barlaam, founded in the early 16th century but named after the 14th-century ascetic Barlaam who first settled on the rock. Renowned for its valuable archive, the monastery was organized by the brothers Nektarios and Theophanis, known as the Apsarades, from Epirus. In 1518, they renovated the chapel of the Three Hierarchs, originally built by Barlaam, and in 1536 constructed the distinctive tower of Brizon. The monastery flourished both spiritually and economically during this period, making it a significant part of Meteora’s monastic heritage.

40 min

Next, you’ll explore other remarkable monasteries nestled among Meteora’s towering rock formations. Each site offers a unique glimpse into the monastic life, featuring exquisite frescoes, ancient artifacts, and serene chapels. As you walk the paths connecting these sacred places, take in sweeping panoramic views of the Thessaly plain below—one of Greece’s most breathtaking landscapes.

60 min

Conclude your exploration with a relaxing lunch in the charming village of Kastraki, nestled at the foot of the Meteora rock formations. Enjoy traditional Greek cuisine in a local taverna while taking in stunning views of the surrounding cliffs. This peaceful village offers the perfect spot to unwind and recharge before your return.

Great trip to Meteora!

My family and I had a great trip to Meteora with our guide, Ruslan. He did a great job keeping us engaged from 7:30 am to the evening. We were very surprised that we were able to do 5 of the 6 monasteries (1 is closed each day of the week, so we actually visited all of the monasteries that were open- but my family and I move fast). We felt like our trip to Greece was complete after this visit, and had a perfect ending. He also took us to Thermopylae and told us the exciting story of the Spartans vs the Persians. Ruslan is humorous, easy-going, and personable, and the whole trip was smooth sailing. Highly, highly recommend!
