Despite a drive of 2-3 hours from Mexico City you should do this tour. You will see one of the oldest monasteries of the country (nowadays the cathedral of Cuernavaca) with 17th century murals. Xochicalco is a ruined city with pyramids and a fortress (and many reliefs) which you will have mainly for yourself, at least during the week. Our guide and driver Arturo made sure we stayed hydrated. The lunch place had large portions too.

When looking into a day trip to Xochicalco I realised that only a few tours exist. It takes 2 1/2 to 3 h to drive from Mexico City to the ruins, and maybe that is the reason. In fact we started our day in Cuernavaca, since many tours stop there in the afternoon. The cathedral is a rare case where you still can find murals from the 17th century, when the complex was founded as a mission. After a visit of the House of Cortes with 20th century frescos our guide Arturo suggested a small restaurant for lunch (big portions so bring some appetite). Xochicalco is an pre columbian site with many pyramids on a fortified hill site with great views of the valley too. At least during the week it was rather quiet. One of the pyramids is covered in reliefs on all sites, really spectacular. All in all both places are worth it to go out of your way. Vibe adventures will also provide water and juice, so they make sure you stay hydrates
