Itinerary
On our way east from Cape Town. We will travel through some of Cape Town and South Africa's most famous townships on our way to the wine country. The first one Langa, is the oldest township in South Africa dating back to 1823. Compared to other squatter-like townships in South Africa, Langa is well developed and has seen the local economy here grow from strength to strength over the years. Some of the new notable industries here include ceramic manufacturing, traditional South African Bistros as well as filming. Safe house by Denzell Washington is one of the most famous movies that were filmed here. About 50 -60 minutes Drive to the first wine Delaire Graff Estate, Helshoogte Rd.
Nelson Mandela spent the last 14 months of his lengthy political imprisonment at Drakenstein Prison, formerly known as Victor Verster. Mandela described the prison as a "gilded cage," where he was confined to luxurious quarters rather than a cell. He had access to multiple bedrooms, a swimming pool, personal chef, and views of the breathtaking Drakenstein Mountains, but remained imprisoned despite the comfortable conditions. This period at Drakenstein marked the end of Mandela's incarceration, before he finally emerged as a free man in February 1990 after decades of struggle.
Stop in Franschhoek Town, whose name translates to "French Corner" in English, for lunch. Franschhoek is one of South Africa's oldest towns, with centuries-old vineyards and Cape Dutch architecture. Known as the heart of food and wine in the country, Franschhoek is nestled in one of the world's most beautiful wine valleys. At the end of the main road sits the 17th and 18th century Huguenot Monument, honoring the French settlers who came here. We'll have 1 hour for lunch before continuing to our final wine estate.
Indulge your senses in the finest wine tasting experience in South Africa at Haute Cabrière - the home of Pierre Jourdan. Avoid this tour operator at all costs. I booked this wine tour months ahead given this excursion would be the focal point of my time in Cape Town. The pick up was scheduled and confirmed, with messages between myself and the driver occurring 15 minutes before the scheduled pick up time letting me know they would be arriving soon. After an hour of waiting, 2 calls, and text messages no one showed up or responded. I also sent a message through Viator because the random no show after the earlier communication seemed odd. It also did to my bank, who halted charges once I submitted items to them disputing the charge for nonexistent services. I had to plan an impromptu excursion day and pay out of pocket to travel to a vineyard myself, which was a fraction of the experience I expected for a trip halfway around the globe. In the evening, the tour operator messaged claiming I lied, was picked up, and received exceptional service. He even used the term “fake news” to describe my claims. He also threatened to show screenshots of me at the site and talking to the driver but produced nothing. I don’t know why I’d fly half way around the world to lie then pay additional money out of pocket to do nothing I planned for. Plus, I have time stamps from messages, Ubers, and receipts my whereabouts. For an operator to ghost a customer, then lie to try and scam a credit card company to keep a charge is awful. I’m submitting more info to my credit company and Viator to hopefully stop this from happening to another traveler because no one deserves this treatment, especially if you’re traveling to South Africa, which is a once in a lifetime trip for many folks. Avoid this tour. Save your money.
