Flying in a seaplane was an exciting experience; it was great to get a different perspective on the city and the fantastic views of the mountains, forests, sea and the city itself. Visiting the Capilano Suspension Bridge and the elevated rainforest walkway was a thrilling experience. Walking amongst the treetops and enjoying the forest atmosphere.
I took two of my employees on this flight as Harbour Air is a client of ours and we wanted to experience a seaplane flight. We got WAY more than we expected out of this and all three of us LOVED the experience. The Harbour Air terminal is surprisingly large and very busy, but not crowded. There is a cafe counter with a super friendly and skilled barista. They also serve drinks and have nice seating including several outdoors tables and chairs where you can watch the aircraft come and go while sipping a cocktail. Boarding was super simple, quick, efficient, and safe with a nice clear pre-boarding safety brief which helped put us all at ease. Once seated inside, the pilot explained a couple things then played a very good, clear safety briefing video while we got underway. Safety absolutely shows as top priority with Harbour Air and this makes the experience relaxing and enjoyable. Seatbelts include an innovative personal floatation device which is attached to you automatically upon an emergency exit, so you don't have to worry about scrambling to find it should you need it. For a smaller aircraft the cabin is comfortably spacious (not cramped feeling), spotlessly clean, and bright. There are lots of individual air vents and a couple fans keeping the air feeling fresh and cool on a hot day. The one thing that stood out to us most was how smooth it was while on the water - not what we expected. Even landing was MUCH smoother than on an airliner. The half hour experience consisted of about 25 minutes in the air, but that other 5 minute is not a write-off as the un-docking, taxi, and docking was also a fun and interesting part of it. The windows are the plane are very large and all were spotlessly clean. The seating inside the Turbo Otter was 1 - 2. The people on the inside (non-window) seats get just as good a view as the window seats, perhaps even better as they get a slightly wider field of view out of multiple windows. A couple windows at the back row are a bit smaller, but they are 'bubble' type, so you can stick your head or camera in there for a spectacular view straight down or along the side of the plane. We LOVED the flight route. First, it feels much longer than 25 minutes, probably because you see SO much! The route gives you great views of Stanley Park, Lion's Gate Bridge, North Van, Horseshoe Bay, Kitsilano Beach, and a stunning close up view of downtown Vancouver. It's kind of a large 'figure-8' shape route, so each side the plane gets a a good look at all the sights. The best part was that, on our flight at least, one of the passengers gets to sit in the cockpit in the co-pilot's position. This aircraft is designed well for that as the control wheel swings over to the pilot's side. The pilot selected one of us to sit there and that made for an amazing experience for him! After the flight the pilot and ground crew were very accommodating with us passengers taking photos of our groups, selfies, and even pics with the pilot! Our pilot, Adam was exceptional throughout. Utmost professional and safe, and also entertaining and engaging with the passengers. So, overall, this flying tour of Vancouver far exceeded our expectations and it was quite clear that Harbour Air strives very hard to make the experience as safe, fun, and enjoyable as possible.
