It is a medieval fortress, built starting with the 14th century on the hill of Cohalm. The first documentary attestation dates from 1324 when the Saxons revolted against King Carol Robert of Hungary took refuge inside the fortress, Castrum Kuholm. The name of Kuholom refers to the rock on which it was built: basalt. Documents from the 15th century mention the fortress as an important trade and craft center with 12 guilds. The citadel served over time as a fortification but also a refuge for the population that lived in the surrounding hills and valleys, its settlement being strategic: at the junction of the roads connecting Transylvania, Moldova and Wallachia through the southeastern passes.Rupea Citadel, built on Cohalmului Hill, dominating the city from above, was built and expanded in the 14th-17th centuries, as a fortress and refuge for the surrounding villages.

Traian gave us a UNESCO tour of Rupea, Viscri, Sighisoara, and Biertan (originally the tour advertised on Viator was for the first three, but we wanted to add Biertan, so we asked if we could pay extra for a private tour). Traian was waiting for us outside our hotel at the designated time. The van he drove us in was luxurious and comfortable, and he had cold water for us on a hot summer day. He started dropping his knowledge as soon as we began driving, which provided us with plenty of context for each of our destinations. It is clear he knows his stuff (and is truly passionate about Romanian history), as he answered all of our questions with poise. Traian guided us through each of our destinations, and had surprises waiting for us at each leg of our trip (for example, he took us to a nice cafe in Viscri that served delicious and authentic local dishes and beverages). He maintained pacing throughout never rushing us but also getting us efficiently from point to point. Overall, would highly recommend for anyone interested in seeing the fortified churches and/or Sighisoara!
Everything was great. Amazing view and place
Great tourist guide. We are traveling with kids and he was so kind. My son said that he is his new friend. Definitely recommended!!
Wonderful tour. Our tour guide, Traian, was excellent at covering much ground in little time while also balancing it with whatever the group needed and adjusting to our preferences. He was already patient with our sightseeing and photo taking — I don’t think I’ve ever had such a pleasant tour experience. Our group was only seven people total, all lovely, and we connected throughout the day. We had some local food and experiences mixed with the UNESCO sightseeing too. Highly recommend!
Beautiful country. Enjoyed the sites!
Excellent day really interesting our guide Traian was really informative loads of historical facts and stories. The booking was easy and they gave us advice on what to do about buying tickets for the attractions. We have booked another 2 tours with this company and looking forward to them.
Wonderful experience. Traian was easy to get along with and extremely knowledgeable about the history of Romania in general and of the historical sites we saw. We made new friends in the other tour passengers.
Good day trip. But don't go Monday some places will be closed for cleaning
Very nice guided tour and lots of information
It was a really nice and well organised experience! Also, the tour guide was more than polite and well informed about the route, the monuments and local history.
