We had a four hour tour with Norbert in Budapest on Saturday, May 16. It was one of the best tours we had on our entire 17 day trip. Norbert was the very best tour guide. He was informative, accompanying us to several sights, stops to take pictures for us when our view was obstructed, etc. He was funny and engaging. Kudos to Norbert for a fantastic experience in Budapest.
A great introduction to authentic Hungarian foods with the added bonus of interesting information & context around Budapest history and customs. Our guide Emőke was knowledgeable, friendly, warm, and made the experience a lot of fun.
Great food tour and Nick was great fun and very knowledgeable. We both took all his recommendations about where to eat after and it was a perfect way to set up our City break in Budapest.
This tour left a little more to be desired. First, let’s start with the positive: Gabor, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, friendly, and full of historical information on the origins of each food or drink as well as the history of the food. He was great. The tour was originally meant to be a 2 hour food tour. Our tour was finished in 1 hour. We traveled to two places. At the second place, Gabor brought food and drink from other locations (cold chimney cake, Palinka and souvenir glasses, and a popular candy bar). We ate quickly, and felt slightly rushed. Traditionally, in our experience with prior food tours, part of the charm is visiting local spots, engaging with local merchants, and actually eating the food when it is freshly prepared and hot. The first stop was cafeteria-style with food that had been prepared and sitting for a time. On our second stop we had freshly prepared langos which was delicious. We came to find that the second stop was our only other stop. Gabor took cold chimney cake from his bag, as well as candy and palinka. I was hoping for a more rich experience and at the price point fo our tour (almost $100/person) I fell very let down. Again, Gabor was very nice but the locations chosen and the lack of freshly prepared food or experience made this a tour I will not recommend.
Dear Ashish, Thank you for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and balanced review. We’re really glad to hear how much you appreciated Gabor — his knowledge, warmth, and passion for food history clearly came through, and that personal connection is a core part of what we aim to offer. At the same time, we understand why the overall experience felt disappointing, especially given the shorter duration and the way the tastings were presented. When guests book a food tour, it’s natural to expect time to move between local spots, interact with vendors, and enjoy food as it’s freshly prepared. We hear clearly that this rhythm and richness were missing for you, and that the experience didn’t feel aligned with the value you expected at this price point. Thank you for explaining so clearly what you were hoping for and how the tour compared to other food experiences you’ve enjoyed. Feedback like yours is genuinely helpful in reflecting on how these tours are structured and how they come across in practice. Kind regards, The Withlocals Team
