Wow! Experience Tell el-Amarna and see a fascinating, personal and important slice of ancient Egyptian history. The tombs are the only place where I've been able to see the process of tomb carving and decoration; the ruins of the ancient city may not be in any way complete, but give you an appreciation of the size of this great experiment in monotheism; the touching paintings of the royal family and their story make this King of Egypt and their family people who you'll relate to on a completely different level than those of the rest of history. This amazing experience would not have been nearly as powerful without our guide, Mustafa - his ability to relate the history of Egypt (and we had him do a complete review for us - what a fount of knowledge) and to make it real to us MADE this tour. There was not a question that Mustafa couldn't field about any place or personage in Egypt - a consummate professional. To top all this off, we had a lovely home-cooked Egyptian meal. None of this would have been possible without our wonderful, professional driver, Ammar - what a gentleman. Thank you, Mustafa and Ammar, for a fantastic day! Note for potential travelers: There are many steps to some of the tombs - if you're unsteady, bring a walking stick.
