Table Mountain Hike via Platteklip Gorge at Sunrise

Description
One of the most popular hikes on our beloved Table Mountain (platte klip in Afrikaans), name's after the flat rocks found on the route. The ‘stairway to heaven’ is the go-to route up Table Mountain for locals alike, although with 650 meters of elevation gained in less than 3 km it is no easy feat! The world belongs to those who get up early. To be one of the few to witness the sunrise on Table Mountain is always special. You can’t beat watching the sunrise from the top of the world and Table Mountain is the closest you’ll get in Cape Town. We will hike up Table Mountain with head lamps to experience the thrill of being the few if not the only one hiking Table Mountain this early at dawn. Watch the light catch the Cape Town Stadium, while the rest of the city comes alive. When you’re so high up, even overcast days don’t matter, because you will be above the clouds. Stop off to grab some coffee at to top cable car station and back at your hotel still in time to catch breakfast!

Itinerary
The hike starts under the cable car and ascent to the contour path situated at the rock base of Table Mountain, certainly a good warm up! The contour path circles the slopes of Table Mountain, offering therefore stunning views of the city and the surrounding. The Platteklip gorge cuts through the front face of Table Mountain, the path zig-zags all the way up until it gets narrower and steeper. The final 150m is spectacular with huge rock walls on either side, narrowing to 4m. It is not to be trifled with, in other words it is a tough hike. Come with plenty of water, sunblock and appropriate footwear. To hike Platteklip Gorge is an unforgettable experience as you are treated with breath-taking views. It is best to hike at sunrise offering the best light for photos as well as a respite from the sun. Way down by cable car

Very good and sympathetic guide who helped us with everything. He gave us room to decide which walk to take. He brought a booklet with pictures of wild plants and looked it up.
Hi Heleen It was a real pleasure hiking up Table Mountain with you. I’m glad you enjoyed having the flexibility to choose the route that suited you best. I also enjoyed looking up at the wild plants — Table Mountain has such incredible and unique flora. Thanks again for the lovely hike and conversation, and I hope you had a wonderful time in Cape Town!
Patrick was fantastic-he went at a pace that was appropriate for our condition and capability. He was very personable and shared his knowledge of the local flora and history. We thoroughly enjoyed him as our guide.
Thank you so much for your kind review! I am delighted to hear that I have made the experience both enjoyable and informative. i hope to welcome you back again soon!
Andy guided me on this amazing hike experience. He is very knowledgeable about the Hike, the best routes, any potential risks, where to stand/sit for the best views and pictures. He was very attuned to my level of fitness and was able to guide us to the summit well ahead of the crowd that arrived later. He came prepared with a fully charged headlamp - and a thermos of hot water and a choice of instant coffee or tea (which was a welcome treat at the early hour). The sunrise view was stunning, life affirming. He took a number of photos of me at key photogenic sites. He gave me a lot of background and history on the city and some of the neighborhoods. Andy is a very pleasant travel companion. Finally he made sure we got down safely. I highly recommend this experience.
Thank you so much for this wonderful review! I’m really glad to hear you enjoyed the hike and felt well taken care of throughout the experience. Most importantly, I’m glad you felt safe and supported from start to finish. Thank you for the high recommendation—truly appreciated. Warm regards,
Patrick was a fantastic guide, very patient and incredibly knowledgable about the wildlife and history of the area. I would recommend him to anyone interested in climbing Table Mountain. The hike itself is challenging (of course), we climbed up through Platterklip gorge. There are some very steep sections, with big rocks/stairs to climb up. If you have short legs like me those sections may be hard work! But it was totally worth it. We climbed in June, and there were very few people hiking, so we had the trail almost completely to ourselves, and when we got up into the clouds it was like a different planet! Overall, an incredible experience made even better with a wonderful guide!
Thank you so much for your thoughtful and detailed review! I am thrilled to hear that you had a good time hiking up Table Mountain. Platteklip Gorge is certainly a challenging route—especially with those steep steps but you handle it well! I really appreciate your kind words and feedback I hope to see you down again in Cape Town for another hike.
Tough first 20 mins, then easier stretch for 45 mins heading along side of mountain to start of gorge and then steady ascent. Took us 3 hrs 15. Benefitted from cool cloud cover for first 2.5 hrs and then sun broke through - more beautiful but tougher in the heat. Guide Patrick was very knowlegeable and let us manage the pace to suit us, so we had a great time!
Hi Justin, Thank-you for having booked your Table Mountain hike with me, I hope that you had a great time in South Africa. God bless.
I found those guides by recommendation of OpenAI. The guides loves the nature instead of making a living, which makes the experiences extraordinary and unforgettable. We had two groups of about 30 people and they all enjoyed the trip.

My partner and I did a morning hike up Platteklip Gorge with Frank and his partner Birgit. The views were incredible and Frank and Birgit provided us with such amazing company! We felt very comfortable in their presence and they were super supportive of any breaks we wanted up the mountain. Very well run tour company and if we are on this side of the world again, we will definitely do it again. Thanks for a great morning :)
Patrick is a super guide! He is very patient, attentive to everyone's needs and levels, funny, knows a lot about the mountains, the fauna and flora, and provides good anecdotes and historical and cultural facts. We did the Table Mountain hike (via the Platteklip route), which is a less technical route but still provides stunning views. We came down via the Cable Car after a stop at the restaurant at the top. Thanks to Patrick for being so professional. Highly recommend him ! PS - Bonus point, he can also speak French !
I had been looking forward to hiking Table mountain since prior visits to Capetown. I was finally able to book a tour and experience the challenging hike. I recommend doing this hike with a guide. The hike was challenging but worth it. The views were breathtaking and feel good. The gide Patrick was very professional, kind. Thank you very much!
