Itinerary

35 min

An idyllic Cotswold village nestling in a wooded valley.Voted the prettiest village in England. This has been a movie and historical drama film location for; Stardust, Warhorse & Poirot as well as the original Dr Dolittle. Time to wander around the cobbled streets and take in the view from the medieval market cross. Relax by the stream in front of the picture postcard weaver’s cottages. Discover the medieval clock in St Andrews church and the 13th Century tomb of Sir Walter de Dunstanville.

Lacock National Trust village is our location for lunch. This is an unspoilt National Trust village that appears as if trapped in time. There has been no major construction here for the last 200 years. Featuring in many films and period dramas including; Harry Potter, Pride and Prejudice, Larkrise to Candleford and Downton Abbey to name a few. There is also an Abbey, one of the few remaining Tudor Monasteries which became home to William Fox Talbot, a major pioneer in photography. Entrance is not included in the tour price and visiting is optional. The Abbey is open from Spring to Autumn and more details are available on the National Trust website.

Definitely recommended!

If someone is visiting this part of England they definitely need to see Stonehenge, and this tour is a convenient way to do that, and is also nice by including the Avebury stone circle and a couple pretty Cotswold towns. That's a lot to include in one day (including quite a bit of driving), but it flowed very well, and there was ample time at Stonehenge itself. Our guide gave a very good presentation, though (being very history-oriented myself) I would have liked a little more detail about the history of Avebury and Stonehenge (but I realize that a lot is unknown about that history). I was glad that the company suggested we download the free audio tour for Stonehenge. Be sure to leave a full day for sightseeing in Bath, but if you have time to do a full-day excursion outside the city, this is a really good one.

The Best Tour!

Fantastic tour! Jason was cheerful and knowledgable and made the journey an absolute delight. He knows so much, not just about the town but about Great Britain, its history, its idioms ... The coach was comfortable and our family had an absolute blast. Thank you!

Castle Combe and Stonehenge

We booked with Mad Max and could not have been more pleased! Our tour guide, Bill, was outstanding and had a great sense of humor, and was so knowledgeable. He tied the tour in with British history. The coach/van was very comfortable. We would definitely recommend this tour and would book with Mad Max again, especially if it was with Bill!

Worth the money!

In Avebury, if you want to see the site and have something to eat, avoid The Red Lion. It's not anything against The Red Lion, but they have a small kitchen, and the flood of tours makes overwhelms them. Viator suggests you get food at the Café or pack a lunch. Trust me... it is a very good suggestion. Over all the tour was very good, and our guide, Andy, was interesting, helpful, patient, and fun.

Go Gerry

Our guide Gerry was fantastic. He's native to the area and gave us a wealth of information regarding the area, culture and history. Who knew we'd find out the derivation of phrases such as being "piss poor" and "blind drunk". We certainly hope he recovers from England s loss in the world cup.

Operator response

Hi Will, it sounds like Gerry kept everyone entertained and informed. We're glad you enjoyed the stories behind some of our more colourful British sayings. Best, Maya

Sensational Sights

Andy was a great guide. Wonderful stories and terrific information. The group size was just right. The van was comfortable. The trip was scenic. We were given plenty of time to see the sights. The Cotswolds villages were charming and picturesque, and of course Stonehedge was sensational.
