Learn about the square’s transformation and its importance to the city’s development.
National Historical Museum (exterior visit) During our walk through Skanderbeg Square, we stop in front of the National Historical Museum to admire its impressive facade. The guide will explain the meaning of the large mosaic called “The Albanians”, a powerful artwork symbolizing the country’s history and unity. We do not enter the museum, but this stop offers great insight into Albania’s past through its most iconic mural.
Stroll around the square and hear stories behind the main buildings, such as the National History Museum, the Opera House, and the former Parliament building. Your guide will explain the mix of architectural styles, from Ottoman to Communist-era designs, reflecting the diverse history of Albania.
Et’hem Bey Mosque (exterior visit) One of Tirana’s most beautiful historic landmarks, the Et’hem Bey Mosque dates back to the late 18th century. We stop to admire its elegant architecture and colorful frescoes from the outside, while the guide explains its cultural and religious importance during Ottoman times and its symbolic reopening after communism.
Bunk’Art 2 (exterior visit) We pass by Bunk’Art 2, located in a former nuclear bunker built during the communist regime. From the outside, the guide will share the story behind its construction and purpose, giving insight into Albania’s isolation during Enver Hoxha’s rule. While we don’t enter, this stop helps understand the country’s recent past and its focus on survival during the Cold War era.
Next, we move to the New Bazaar, a charming area where you’ll experience the local market vibe. Learn about the area’s revitalization and its historical importance as a trading hub. Your guide will share insights into the role this market played in the daily life of Tirana residents.
At the Tanners Bridge, your guide will take you through the early origins of Tirana, where the city started. Learn about the role this bridge played in the city’s growth and how it connected different parts of the city in ancient times
Walk through the Castle of Tirana, a site steeped in history. While the castle is not a typical tourist spot, its remnants offer a glimpse into the city’s early history and development. Your guide will explain its significance and how it has shaped the capital.
As you continue down Martyrs' Boulevard, learn about Tirana’s political and historical evolution. Your guide will share stories of Albania’s fight for freedom and the key events that took place along this monumental street, making it a significant part of the city’s memory. Pyramid of Tirana The next stop is the iconic Pyramid of Tirana, a controversial and fascinating structure from the communist era. Your guide will provide a deep dive into its history, its original purpose, and how it symbolizes the post-communist transformation of the city.
As we pass through Mother Teresa Square, the guide shares the story of this large ceremonial square named after the Albanian-born Saint Teresa. Surrounded by important institutions, the square reflects Tirana’s mix of modern development and national pride.
Located at Mother Teresa Square, the Polytechnic University is one of the country’s top educational institutions. Built in the 1950s in a socialist-realist style, it remains a symbol of Albania’s focus on education and scientific progress during the post-war years.
Finally, you’ll explore the Blloku neighborhood, once a restricted area for government officials during the communist regime. Today, it’s a trendy area full of cafes and vibrant local life. Visit the Orthodox Church and hear how this area reflects Tirana’s modern transformation.

We found the Small Group Walking Tour of Tirana through Freetour.com. We were so lucky to have Stivi as our guide. He really knows Tirana and Albania inside out, and he genuinely loves showing people around. His English is perfect, and he has this way of telling stories that actually makes the history feel relevant and alive rather than just a list of dates. We love how caring he is - he got us some cold water during the walk. His local recommendations for bars, restaurants, and neighborhoods were spot on. He has great taste! We ended up at one of the bars he suggested and loved the vibe so much we didn't want to leave. On a personal note, I was a bit cheeky and asked him to help me get a lost item sent back home, and he went way above and beyond to make it happen. That kind of kindness says everything you need to know about him as a person.
Skerdi was a great guide in Tirana. He spoke with great passion about his city, and personal stories about his family were also shared, helping us understand more about the history of Albania. We recommend our guide Skerdi to everyone, and the next time we visit the city, we will definitely book a guided tour with Skerdi again. Thanks for the wonderful and educational walk!
Dorina is a punctual guide and well-structured in her explanations. Her French is impeccable.
We went to the meeting place and waited for 30 minutes but no guide. The amount of the exit has been withdrawn. The phone number to contact the guide does not work. A scam!
Very informative and a fun way to see a lot of the center city in a short amount of time. Highly recommend this tour while in Tirana, Albania.
Absolutely fantastic few hours with Stevi. I'd never been to Albania before but even though I had done some research there's no way I'd have come away from Tirana with so much education. I had originally booked for a 1430 start but Stevi contacted me via WhatsApp, told me where to meet him which was actually where I already was. He suggested we start early and I was more than happy with that. As well as imparting a lot of history of the Balkan region in general he also recommended a local restaurant where traditional Albanian food was served which I visited and had a fantastic meal. Overall it was unbelievable value for money and if you are new to Tirana I can thoroughly recommend you try to book with Stevi.
