However, while Pompeii was buried under a layer of ash and lapilli, Herculaneum was covered under a huge mass of mud and volcanic debris. This huge solid mass allowed a better preservation of perishable materials like wood, remnants of food, fabrics, etc.

Lello was such a wonderful tour guide- incredibly knowledgeable and fun. Our train from Rome was late and he was very accommodating. Everyone from our group from my 60 year old father to my 8 year old nephew were very interested. Lello was really great when our toddler started getting antsy. Can't recommend this tour enough!

What an enjoyable day! Rossana was a wonderful guide. She knew so many details that we wouldn't have gotten if we had gone on our own. It was nice the first time to Pompeii and Herculaneum to have a guide to see and learn what happen there all those centuries ago. We found it a amazing that there is still so much uncovered in Herculaneum. Rossana was very personable and you could tell that she loved what she was doing.
