Secret Habsburg Castles: Franz Ferdinand’s Artstetten & Melk

We leave Vienna and head west towards the Danube Valley. As we drive through the changing landscapes, your guide will set the scene, explaining the complex history of the Habsburg family and the political tensions that led to 1914.

This fairytale castle with its iconic onion domes was the beloved home of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The Museum: We visit the museum dedicated to his life, seeing personal artifacts that tell the story of a man, a father, and a visionary, not just a historical figure. The Crypt: It is a moving moment to stand in the crypt where he rests side-by-side with his wife, Sophie. A short drive brings us to a spectacular hilltop. Maria Taferl is one of Austria's most important pilgrimage sites. The View: From the terrace, you have arguably the best panoramic view of the entire Danube Valley, stretching all the way to the Alps on clear days. The Church: We step inside to admire the ornate gold-leaf interior, a hidden masterpiece of the Baroque era.

We pause for a relaxing lunch at a traditional restaurant overlooking the Danube. It’s the perfect time to discuss the morning’s discoveries over authentic Austrian cuisine. (Lunch cost not included).

We conclude our day with the baroque splendor of Stift Melk. Thanks to the quieter afternoon hours, we can enjoy the interiors without the usual morning crowds.
