The Main Attraction: The Reclining Buddha The true draw of Preah Ang Thom is the massive sandstone sculpture of the Reclining Buddha, measuring over 8 meters (26 feet) long. Believed to have been carved in the 16th century, this serene figure of Buddha represents his entry into Nirvana—the final state of enlightenment, free from suffering and the cycle of rebirth. Unlike most traditional Buddha statues found in temples, this figure is not built but carved directly into the mountain’s rock. This integration with nature gives the sculpture a powerful presence, as if the mountain itself is sleeping in spiritual tranquility. The Reclining Buddha at Phnom Kulen: Cambodia's Sacred Giant of Serenity Tucked within the misty highlands of Cambodia's revered Phnom Kulen National Park lies one of the country's most spiritually significant and visually captivating monuments: the Reclining Buddha.
