Robben Island is an island in Table Bay – Cape Town. It was named by the Dutch- Robben Island and the British had called it Seal Island. It was used as an animal quarantine station, as a leper colony and for isolation of mainly political prisoners. To date, three former inmates of Robben Island have gone on to become President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, Kgalema Motlanthe and Jacob Zuma. Robben Island was declared a Unesco World Heritage site in 1999 and offers daily tours. Tour to this world Heritage site begins at the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront. After pick-up from your hotel in Cape Town, you will be driven to the V&A Waterfront where you board the Robben Island Ferry to the world-famous place of incarceration of Nelson Mandela for 18 of his 27 years. This place dubbed “South Africa Alcatraz” served as a leper colony, a place of isolation, banishment, and imprisonment. The Island is a state reminder of the harsh conditions endured as a reward for freedom from the Government of apartheid. After the historical, emotional, educative and informative tour which is conducted either by ex-prison warders or ex-prisoners of Robben Island, you board the ferry back to the Waterfront.

Robben island disclosed

It was important for me to understand the conditions experienced by the range of political prisoners at Robben Island and to have the background explained by individuals who had experienced the conditions themselves. The presentations were helpful but more importantly seeing the actual cells etc brought it all to life.

Operator response

History Coming To Life at Robben Island

This is a well structured tour which is very informative and educational. It removes all all the mythical beliefs about Robben Island and how Mandela was treated. We learnt a lot also about the struggle icons of the liberation of South Africa. History comes alive with the ex-prisoners who took us on tour. Thanks to Raw Tours... Really Great experience hard to forget in life.

Excellent Tour of Robben Island and Township!

Remmy was a fantastic guide during our trip to Robben Island and to the Township of Langa. We learned so much about the history of South Africa and had fun while doing it. Remmy was knowledgeable and very kind. He introduced us to Zamile who gave us a tour through the township of Langa. We visited the art and cultural center in the township and learned how mosaics and pottery are made and played the drums. It was a truly humbling experience to tour through the township. Thank you again Remmy for the excellent tour!

Complete South African History

Robben Island is a famous and notorious place. But the most crucial aspect of this experience is the history which it holds. It was surreal to imagine Nelson Mandela and a host of other political prisoners spent such a long time at this cold place. The living conditions are extremely harsh surrounded by the ocean all 4 sides. The guide was so knowledgeable as he is an ex prisoner who was incarcerated during the period of Nelson Mandela. The last part of the tour was a township tour of Langa township which complements the history of South Africa with Robben island. It was amazing to see the locals not slightly fazed by the groups of tourists walking around. Thanks to the guide Remmy

Long walk to freedom

This was an eye opener visiting this prison museum which holds an emotional history of Nelson Mandela. The history infrastructure and the whole surroundings are totally amazing. It takes someone with a big heart to learn and forgive the previous regime considering how they treated the political prisorners. For those interested in global history this is a must do experience in Cape Town

A life-changing experience

Our city tour guide Mr. Remi made sure we were picked up early and had more than enough time to make the ferry. The tour was magnificent, so much history and a sense of aw being there in person. I appreciate all.if the tour personnel who made it a very pleasant experience even though it's a somber reminder of a crime against humanity.
