Be careful with this tour operator – they’re selling tickets for Robben Island even though it’s closed for maintenance until September 1st! It is not possible to visit right now. We experienced an unfortunate issue with this booking (tour guide Mark). We had reserved the tour to Robben Island, but upon arrival, we were informed that Robben Island has been closed for maintenance since June 30st. We had additional activities included in our package, such as a visit to Kirstenbosch. However, our guide Mark hadn’t even purchased the tickets in advance. Instead, he used tickets originally meant for other guests who didn’t show up. The guide acted as if he was completely surprised to find out that Robben Island was closed, but he clearly knew it in advance. In fact, I found a review from another customer who had the exact same unfortunate experience – also with the same guide, Mark. What’s even more unbelievable is that Viator is still allowing them to sell tickets regarding Robben islands
We were surprised by Lorenzo’s review. He was fully refunded for Robben Island by the company and also received payment for the Botanical Gardens entrance and wine tasting at Groot Constantia. Despite this, he requested a full refund from Viator. We believe this was dishonest, and therefore asked Viator not to consider his unfair review.
Learning the history of Robben Island and all that was endured by the prisoners was eye-opening and very sad to hear. We missed the tour of the winery but we were able to still taste at least five wines at the winery. It was still a great day!
Excellent Tour and guide, we enjoyed every minute of it. Our guide was very knowledgeable and patient.
thank you
The Robben Island tour is truly memorable. I can't imagine visiting Cape Town and not experiencing this vital part of South African history. I don't have words to describe the impact of hearing first hand descriptions of what life was like as a politician prisoner on Robben Island. The facts are important but the emotional impact will stay with me forever. Our driver Mark was great. He knew the city very well and was responsive to our interests. The weather turned rainy and windy after our tour on Robben Island. Mark's knowledge and flexibility helped us come up with plan B (lunch and brief visit to Kirstenbosch botanical gardens).
we really appreciate
