Then, the leather souk, where you'll find handmade wallets, belts, bags, shoes.. Then comes a cultural trip back in time to discover : the Farnatchi, where you can uncover the process of heating the water in traditional public steam baths, called hammams, which dates back to Roman times; the Farnatchi is also where some locals still bring their dishes to be slowly cooked in a wood-fired oven; + an age-old bakery where artisanal bread is still cooked the old fashioned way; Afterwards, you'll get inside one of the city's well-reputed herbal stores, where you can learn everything you want to know about herbs, spices and essential oils while having a Moroccan mint tea and some local pastry.

Even if you have no intention purchasing a lamp, our Private Shopping Tour wouldn't be complete if we didn't include a final stop at a brass lamps & lanterns gallery. It’s worth visiting this glittering place, sells everything from small candleholders to to intricate multistory chandeliers appropriate for the entry hall of a sultan’s palace.

Lovely people but very unnecessary tour to spend money on

The Guide picked us up at the riad on point, answered all our questions and provided us with a lot of information abou the site, so it was a bit like a sightseeing tour as well. He helped us negotiate. But let me be honest on how this kind of tour works...there are a quadzillion shops in the souks all buying at pretty much the same wholesellers. If you go with a guide (nothing personal though, he did a good job) they bring you to selected very fancy boutique shops - something i would NEVER set a foot in, even at home. The prices there are approx. 400% higher than in any shop in the souks, despite beeing the same quality...of course, every single "family business" we visited was very old AND very famous AND did everything by hand/ by themselfes...yeah shure. Another thing that puzzled me was, that even though i clearly communicated in the beginning of the tour that i am not at all interested in rugs, we still visited a fancy rug-place where we sat patiently, while 3 people offered us around 15 rugs. So we politely waited for them to realize that we wouldnt buy sth, only then we were able to move on. Its a touristy place, so yes you will pay a tourist price anywhere you go, and yes it will be high (we knew that and were fine with it), but if you go through the nervebraking hustle of negotiating alone you probably still save money. Hear me out: We payed for the tour (and you get A LOT for 60 bucks in the medina, plus you have to calculate in the expected tip for guides: amounts up to 10 euros are not uncommon) thinking we would get everything on our list and could shop in peace but in the end, we were completely overwhelmed from all the "special offers" we thought we could skip that way (they just hit us from an unexpected direction) and endet up buying sth for a very high price (even for europe: back in the riad i checked and we payed like twice as much as we would have at home for similar quality product) we didnt even had on our list. Shure, nobody forced us to buy, but at that point we had somehow completely lost relations to what stuff was allowed to cost plus we wanter to get at least something out of the tour. So, even though our guide was very lovely as a person, i would not recommend doing this tour, you just dont need it. Take one day of your trip to negotiate your way through the souks - make a pricelist on how much you are willing to spend on each piece and stick with it. Remember, usually sellers start around 2-300% the amount of what the product is really worth, so just start your offer at one third of the price and negotiate up to 1/2 of it, not more. When you walk away they usually follow you anyways and if not: somewhere you will find the exact same piece for the price you wished. Save the 60+ bucks and trust the process, you can do this👍.

Operator response

Dear Sandra, Thank you for acknowledging that your guide was punctual, knowledgeable, informative, and helpful with negotiations, and that overall “he did a good job.” We appreciate that recognition. At the same time, your overall rating reflects a very different conclusion, which suggests the experience itself was not aligned with what you were looking for. Our guide mentioned that you were kind and polite guests, and we value that. Our tours are flexible by design, and we always encourage guests to clearly share their priorities at the beginning so we can tailor the route and visits accordingly. When expectations differ from the tour’s structure, it can unfortunately lead to this kind of mismatch. Your suggestion to explore the souks independently can absolutely be the right approach for travelers focused primarily on picking up simple souvenirs. Our tour is designed for a different type of experience though, one centered around craftsmanship, context, and curated introductions. In some ways, it is similar to visiting an art museum: if someone isn’t particularly interested in the stories behind the pieces, the techniques, or the artistic process, the visit may feel unnecessary. For others, that deeper layer is precisely what makes it worthwhile and offers a very different level of appreciation. Unfortunately, it seems that you came to the souks with some preconceived ideas about pricing and quality, which made it difficult for the experience to fully meet your expectations. When guests arrive convinced that all items are the same or doubt every statement, it can be challenging to fully appreciate the nuances and craftsmanship that our tour is designed to highlight. While many products may look similar at first glance, quality, materials, production processes, and durability vary significantly. Our curated visits focus on connecting guests with established artisans and family-run workshops where items are mostly handmade, crafted with traditional techniques, and produced with care. It’s also worth noting that you arrived in Marrakech shortly after visiting the Sahara desert region, where many locally produced items tend to be less expensive due to lower transport and production costs. That difference in regional pricing can naturally influence expectations when visiting the souks of Marrakech. In your review, you mentioned paying a “very high price.” For clarity, the item purchased was a handcrafted wooden box for $20. While value is always subjective and we respect that, we believe it’s important to provide context when discussing pricing. We are also aware that some guests may receive alternative advice or suggestions from local staff or riad receptions, sometimes creating pressure or guilt around purchasing if not booked through them. These practices are intended to steer guests toward specific providers and can influence perceptions of value. While we unfortunately cannot control these practices, they can sometimes lead guests to question or regret items they have genuinely enjoyed buying. Regarding shop selection, we aim to balance authenticity, quality, and reliability. We work with established artisans and boutiques where production standards, materials, and working conditions are transparent. While these businesses may not always offer the lowest prices in the medina (some do), they provide consistency and accountability, something many travelers find reassuring. This tour is not only about visiting fancy shops; it includes a variety of authentic, carefully curated experiences. As you said, purchasing is always entirely optional, and some guests book our shopping tour specifically to enjoy guidance, care, and curated introductions that they would not get when exploring on their own. For future readers, this tour is designed for travelers who want to explore the medina souks with confidence and ease, appreciate the value of craftwork and handmade items, and enjoy tours that provide orientation, storytelling, curated introductions, and guidance in understanding craftsmanship and pricing dynamics. This experience is less about finding the absolute cheapest item and more about discovering the layers of the medina with a knowledgeable, vetted local guide by your side. Sandra, we appreciate you joining us and regret that the experience did not fully align with your expectations. Feedback like yours helps us refine our approach and reinforces the importance for our guides to adapt to guests’ stated preferences in real time, while staying true to the tour’s goal: providing a cultural introduction to the souks that is informative, respectful, and supportive. Wishing you all the best in your future travel adventures!

Good tour but lost quite a bit of time

Excellent tour of the souks with a very knowledgeable and friendly guide. Takes you to some lovely places and you’ll learn about the history of Marrakesh. Unfortunately our driver was 40 minutes late for our pick up and the tour finished at the same time so we lost time. Quite a bit when the excursion paid for is 180 minutes 😞

Operator response

Thanks for the honest review, Adam. We really appreciate it. We're really glad to hear you enjoyed the tour and the guide’s insights, but you’re absolutely right about the frustration with the late start. There was a miscommunication between our transport partner and the driver, and we’re genuinely sorry it affected your experience. We’ve followed up with them to make sure this doesn’t happen again. We're grateful for your patience, and that you still took the time to highlight the positive parts of your experience.

Private souks shopping tour

Yahya was an excellent tour guide I was able to make all of the purchases I wanted and get to experience so many new things such as seeing how the dough is made into bread in community oven, Berber style rugs, herbal pharmacy where they were making argan oil and the shop where they were making leather bags and shoes. These are just a few stops along the way but it was a great time!

exciting cultural insights into the souks of Marrakesh

Our guide Omar led us through the souks of the Medina of Marrakesh for almost three hours, patiently answering all of our questions and helping us to haggle. He took our interests into account and led us to suitable traders that we would never have found otherwise. We felt very safe in his company - absolutely recommended.

Local Souk Tour

We had a great tour with Abdul! He was infinitely patient and generous with his time and knowledge. I would recommend this tour if you are interested in learning about the local makers of Moroccan products as well as culture and history. We enjoyed exploring and felt no pressure to buy anything, but were happy to buy products directly from the makers at fair prices. Thank so much for a great day.
