At The Giraffe House Wildlife Awareness centre we provide easy access to some of Africa’s wonderful wildlife and bird species. Focusing on African wildlife, Giraffe House aims to provide a place for people to enjoy the outdoors, whilst experiencing and learning about animals and why they are special. An important member of their team is Gerry, our hand reared giraffe. Did you know that giraffes can reach almost 6 m and are therefore the tallest land mammals on earth?
Drakenstein Lion Park was established in 1998 to provide lions in distress with sanctuary, where they could live in safety, free from abuse and persecution, and be treated with the compassion and respect they deserved. The Park is situated in the scenic Cape Winelands and comprises of 50 acres of sprawling lion habitat. The Park is actively involved in improving the quality of life of lions in captivity, locally as well as internationally, either by offering these animals a lifetime home or working in conjunction with other animal welfare organizations to secure a safe future for individual animals in dire need.
Over one thousand crocodiles, over one hundred skins, over ten baby crocs and only one Albino named Snowy. Le Bonheur Crocodile Farm is a registered breeder and thus the dammed domicile of this Nile reptile.
Enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee while taking in the stunning views of the Alpaca herd, the Dromedaries and Table Mountain in the background. Engage with the friendly Alpacas in the petting zoo, feeding them and enjoying playful interactions. Don't miss witnessing the skilled weavers at work, adding an extra layer of artistry to your sanctuary experience.

Gauthier was a nice guide who seemed to enjoy his job, but he also took phone calls all the time and I felt rushed at the various stops. He also guilted me into paying for his lunch. The cheetah, lion, monkey, and crocodile stops were well worth the time but the giraffe stop was not really worth it.
I contacted African Xplora shortly before we left for our trip as our planned tour got cancelled; they were able to accommodate my request with only a week's notice. Then I had to contact them again to change the date of the tour and again they said no problem. That was awesome! Remi was our driver for the day and he was waiting at our hotel right on time for pick up. We headed out to our first location and I let him know that we had already been to one of the stops on the itinerary and could we do something instead. He didn't tell us any plans at that time, but we did make an additional stop later in the day. Our first stop didn't go as planned as the Giraffe House Wildlife Awareness Centre denied us entry as we weren't wearing boots and the ground was a wet from rain. We were very upset by this, but it was no fault of the company or Remi. We made all the other stops and we were just fine without boots! Since we missed the Giraffe House and the one other stop that we had already visited, we made a stop at the Babylonstoren Hotel and Gardens. The gardens were really beautiful and this was a great addition to the day's tour. We enjoyed seeing the lions at Drakenstein. Perhaps the best stop is Monkey Town where we got to participate in an encounter with squirrel monkeys. They give you bits of food to feed them and they all come to sit on you. To our amazement, the monkeys were very sweet. Remi was a knowledgeable guide and shared history where ever we went. I could tell he was upset when the Giraffe House refused us, but he tried to accommodate us however he could. Overall he was a great guide and we had a good day.
