Choosing circuit 1 with a private guide was the best decision. I traveled with my 81-year-old mother and we were able to tour Machu Picchu at our own pace, enjoying every explanation and every landscape without feeling pressured. An unforgettable experience that I especially recommend to those traveling with older adults.
It's a sensational place, full of stories and memories. Each piece brings a knowledge and a memory. Go with a guide that explains each part makes all the difference. I did Circuit 3 and found it great.

A bit expensive for a short trip

The guide was above average but his photography skills were excellent. I realised this is preferable to having an excellent guide as memories are in the pictures and videos. The communication was problematic. There was no contact from the tour operator and contacted them the day before. Communication was delayed with a reply that the guide would contact us by the evening. Only next morning at 7.30 am did he contact us for a tour starting at 10.30 am. Had us worried as we needed a guide to visit Machu Pichu.

Of course, this is a must-visit place for tourists. We arrived in Aguas Calientes the day before and had tickets for the 7:00 a.m. entry to Machu Picchu. Looking back, I think going that early was a mistake. When we arrived by bus, we were greeted by rainy weather. We didn't have umbrellas, and our guide didn't encourage us to buy any rain protection beforehand. A few minutes after we entered, heavy rain started pouring down. The famous views were completely hidden by clouds, and we got soaked. It was so bad that my shoes were still wet when we got back home to Geneva! It was also quite cold, making the whole tour very unpleasant. Based on our experience, I would recommend booking an entry time around noon, when you're more likely to have better weather. I don't remember which circuit we took, but it started from the lower area. In my opinion, it's not worth it. Instead, choose one of the circuits that includes the classic panoramic viewpoint, which is much more impressive. Unfortunately, because of the terrible weather, we didn't get to see Machu Picchu at all. We'll have to come back one day and hopefully have better luck.
I have been a big fan of this mystical place and the more I checked photos the more I wanted to be there. This year I finally went and it was even more beautiful than I had imagined. There is an aura around this place that cannot be described!!

My wife and I used Inca Expert Travel for our trip to Peru this past July. They took care of all logistics flawlessly for us. They arranged an excellent private guide for us in Machu Picchu as well as in the Sacred Valley, Cusco and Lima. Our visit to MP was everything that we expected it to be. I was a little surprised with the small unloading area at the park entrance at the top of the mountain. We had tickets for the morning tour where you get the postcard view and the afternoon ticket where we walked through the complex. Growing up, there were two ancient wonders that I always wanted to see, the Egyptian Pyramids and Machu Picchu. I got to see the Pyramids a few years ago and now I’ve seen MP. It was truly the trip of a lifetime.
