Escape the busy city centre and discover Funchal from above on a private tuk-tuk tour through quiet hillside streets, local roads and scenic viewpoints. Enjoy panoramic views over Funchal Bay, the harbour, the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, from spots many visitors never reach. Along the way, I’ll share stories about Madeira, point out places of interest and recommend restaurants, viewpoints and experiences for the rest of your stay. There will be time to stop for photos, and I’ll happily adapt the route to the weather, traffic and your interests. Travelling by tuk-tuk makes it easy to reach viewpoints and narrow roads that larger vehicles simply can’t access, a relaxed, personal way to see Funchal from a different perspective. Some of my favourite stops on this route don’t even have official names, just spots I’ve found over the years with a great view and no crowds. If you’d rather see the Funchal locals know than tick off a checklist, this is the tour for you.

The Mercado dos Lavradores has been the heart of Funchal’s fresh produce trade since it opened in 1940, its entrance decorated with traditional azulejo tile panels. Inside, stalls piled with tropical fruit, flowers and the day’s catch spread across several floors, often watched over by flower-sellers in traditional Madeiran dress. It’s a great stop for photos and a taste of local life.
Funchal’s Old Town is best known for streets like Rua de Santa Maria, with its collection of brightly painted doors, narrow cobbled lanes and traditional local restaurants. These historic corners are one of the most characterful and photogenic sides of the city.
Pináculo is one of Funchal’s most photographed viewpoints, offering a rare perspective that looks back over the city from the cliffs of São Gonçalo. From here, enjoy sweeping views over the bay, the harbour and the Atlantic Ocean, with plenty of time for photos.
Praça do Município is often considered Funchal’s prettiest square, paved in black-and-white Portuguese cobblestone and framed by three historic buildings: the Town Hall, the former Bishop’s Palace, now a museum, and the Igreja do Colégio. This 17th-century Jesuit church, one of the richest in Madeira, hides an extraordinary Baroque interior behind its plain white façade, with gilded woodcarvings and tile panels covering almost every surface. It’s a peaceful spot to pause, take photos and step inside if the church happens to be open.

Pick-up is included within Funchal at no extra cost. Your driver-guide can collect you from your hotel, apartment, cruise port area, restaurant, or another agreed meeting point within Funchal. Please be ready 5 minutes before the scheduled pickup time. After booking, please send your exact pickup location, and your driver-guide will confirm the best meeting point. If your accommodation is on a narrow or restricted street, a nearby pickup point may be arranged. Drop-off can also be arranged within Funchal, where safely accessible.

Incredible tour! Virgílio was extremely knowledgeable, kind and professional. Doing this tour in the beginning of your trip is a MUST to see the area and learn which places you have to see while in Madeira. We went to one of the restaurants he suggested for dinner that night and it was our favorite place we ate at all vacation!

Our tuc tuc tour with Virgilio was a really great experience. He was spot on time, very polite, helpful & informative. He showed us some lovely spots in Funchal which we would not have found otherwise. He recommended a bakery selling Pastel de Nata & he was right, they were divine. My friend & I felt safe, looked after & we really enjoyed the hour spent on this trip & I have already recommended him to a friend who is visiting in October.
